Guest guest
International Day of Protest Against the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter Dear friends and colleagues: The dolphin drive in Taiji, Japan, is the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world - about 2300 dolphins per year, which is more than 3x the amount of whales killed in the Antarctic. About 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed throughout Japan every year, and all of the meat tested so far has toxic levels of mercury. Most Japanese people don't know about the slaughter or the contamination. During the drive hunts, the dolphins are killed in a secret cove hidden away in a National Park in the Wakayama prefecture, a few hours' drive down the coast from Osaka and Kyoto. The cove is covered with tarps and nets, and access is blocked by steel gates, barbed wire, razor ribbon and guards. The government is trying to keep the yearly blood bath a secret but that is getting harder to do because of all the attention this issue has been receiving. We must keep the pressure on. Japan Dolphin Day will take place on Monday, September 3rd this year. It will be held at as many Japanese embassies and consulate offices as possible. The goal is to make this the biggest global protest against the Japanese dolphin slaughter in history. To pull this off, we need YOUR help! We need to mobilize thousands of peaceful protesters in front of Japanese embassies around the world. We are asking you to sign up for the demo. Come on folks, we can do this! If your organization is willing to participate in this important global event, please contact me: ricobarry By the way, several NGOs have asked for fresh images of the dolphin slaughter for their media contacts. Our colleagues at The Oceanic Preservation Society produced a powerful Public Service Announcement (PSA) regarding this particular issue which is now available. For high resolution photos and broadcast-quality movie downloads, please send your media contacts here: www.OPSociety.org Keep the faith, -- ric o'barry www.SaveJapanDolphins.org Here's who we are so far: Animal Welfare Institute - Washington DC CATCA - Vancouver BC Earth Island Institute - San Francisco/ Manila Elsa Nature Conservancy - Tokyo In Defense of Animals - San Francisco The Junglees - Calcutta Marine Connection - London Ocean Care (ASMS) - Bern Philippine Animal Welfare Society - Manila Sea Shepherd - Budapest Wal-und Delfinschutz-Forum - Duesseldorf WSPA - Boston Zoocheck - Toronto
