Guest guest
Below is an archive press release from UNESCO on this 'New 7 Wonders of the World'. I would request you all to read this before casting your vote. Thanks, Azam http://whc.unesco.org/en/news/352 <http://whc.unesco.org/en/news/352>UNESCO confirms that it is not involved in the " New 7 wonders of the world " campaign Monday, July 9, 2007 In order to avoid any damaging confusion, UNESCO wishes to reaffirm that there is no link whatsoever between UNESCO's World Heritage programme, which aims to protect world heritage, and the current campaign concerning " The New 7 Wonders of the World " . This campaign was launched in 2000 as a private initiative by Bernard Weber, the idea being to encourage citizens around the world to select seven new wonders of the world by popular vote. Although UNESCO was invited to support this project on several occasions, the Organization decided not to collaborate with Mr. Weber. UNESCO's objective and mandate is to assist countries in identifying, protecting and preserving World Heritage. Acknowledging the sentimental or emblematic value of sites and inscribing them on a new list is not enough. Scientific criteria must be defined, the quality of candidates evaluated, and legislative and management frameworks set up. The relevant authorities must also demonstrate commitment to these frameworks as well as to permanently monitoring the state of conservation of sites. The task is one of technical conservation and political persuasion. There is also a clear educational role with respect to the sites' inherent value, the threats they face and what must be done to prevent their loss. There is no comparison between Mr Weber's mediatised campaign and the scientific and educational work resulting from the inscription of sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List*. The list of the " 7 New Wonders of the World " will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the internet and not the entire world. This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public. ***** * New sites will be added to UNESCO's World Heritage List during the 31st session of the World Heritage Committee in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 23 June to 2 July. **On Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 10:52 AM, < journalistandanimals wrote: > > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > <sghosh <sghosh%40wwfindia.net>> > Jun 18, 2009 10:34 AM > Fw: KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK VOTING CLOSES ON 7th JULY, 2009 > journalistandanimals <journalistandanimals%40gmail.com> > > ----- Forwarded by /wwfindia on 06/18/2009 10:34 AM ----- > Samir Sinha/wwfindia N G Sitlhou/wwfindia, Khalid > Pasha/wwfindia@wwfindia, Dilpreet B Chhabra/wwfindia, Dinesh > Saini/wwfindia@wwfindia, Pankaj Bakshi/wwfindia@wwfindia, > Ghosh/wwfindia@wwfindia, akhilesh kumar/wwfindia@wwfindia, Rahul > Dutta/wwfindia, Dipankar Ghose/wwfindia, Diwakar Sharma/wwfindia@wwfindia > 06/18/2009 09:46 AM Fw: KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK VOTING > CLOSES > ON 7th JULY, 2009 > ------------------------------ > > Please share will all who may be interested. > > regards > Samir Sinha > Head, TRAFFIC -India > WWF India Secretariat > 172-B, Lodi Estate, N.Delhi 110003, India > Tel: +91-11-41504786, Fax: +91-11-43516200 > Visit us at " www.traffic.org " > > TRAFFIC- the wildlife trade monitoring network- is a joint programme of WWF > and IUCN-The World Conservation Union. Guest guest
The website is the following since there appears to be trouble in accessing this : http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/vote_on_nominees/ The message circulated by me does not say anything about UNESCO. The website has a FAQ section that deals with queries. UNESCO allegedly makes the following comments : * " There is no comparison between Mr Weber's mediatised campaign and the scientific and educational work resulting from the inscription of sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List*. The list of the " 7 New Wonders of the World " will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the internet and not the entire world. This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public. " * If only UN initiatives worked sustainably and significantly, then we would have been spared the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If only UN initiatives worked sustainably and significantly, then India should have been a permanent member of the Security Council by now. If the UN has been bypassed for the current conflicts that have killed in excess of 650,000 people, then people might as well bypass the UN for voting for this initiative in a private capacity, there is absolutely nothing wrong. My suggestion is if you feel like voting, please go ahead and do it, regardless of UNESCO's involvement. I have, and consciously so. UN's role in contributing to these sites is another debate altogether. It is a relevant debate, but to my mind, it is a separate issue. Guest guest
Accepted what you say. Even my intention was also to pass on information to the readers and certainly not to restrict them from voting. The message circulated by you does not say anything about UNESCO but some of the people who head this 'New 7 Wonders' are former UN guys. So one does not loose anything if they get to know a little bit more about what UN has to say on this?
