Guest guest
The UK group " Cetacea Defence " would like information regarding the following. Particularly how to contact Professor Kunhikkannan who may have more information? Contact: alan cooper <cetaceadefenceuk wrote: Please see my letters below. Are you aware of the issue and if so do you have further information on the matter. SHOCKING DOLPHIN KILLS IN VIOLATION OF INDIA'S LAWS Dear Ambassador Please read the letter below. It was emailed to Mr Varghese on 11TH April wildker. No acknowledgement has been received. To avoid my organisation calling for an International boycott of Goa with headlines like the one above and the resulting damage to your country's economy, could you look into the matter forthwith and reply to the letter below? Alan Cooper _________________ V X Varghese, Chief Conservator of Forests & Wildlife Dear Sir According to conservation campaigner Professor Kunhikkannan it has recently been revealed that fishermen in places such as Poonthura, Kozhikode and Kochi on the south west coast of India. are slaughtering dolphins and the meat sold. Professor Kunhikkannan is quoted as remarking " We have taken up the issue with the authorities but no action has been initiated " , The dolphins are harpooned, slaughtered and the meat sold to city hotels. A midsized dolphin weighing around 100kg can fetch Rs10,000 (approximately £120). Cetacea Defence believes that any deliberate killing of dolphins is against India's Wildlife Act and action MUST be taken against the perpetrators. India is dependant on International tourism in certain areas( Goa) and may suffer a tourism backlash from countries such as the UK if action is not taken to stop the killings. What plans do the authorities have to stop these illegal kills. I look forward to your immediate response Yours truly; Alan Cooper; CETACEA DEFENCE UK. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~
