Azam its jst not the case with Allahabad...but Lucknow and Varanasi as

well......apart from many other towns and cities of UP. While Lucknow one

doesn't have the trucks n lorries parked outside to sell the body parts but yes

the stench is unbearable when you pass through that area.Ironically the Lko

slaughter house is behind a very posh 3-star hotel (Clarks Avadh) and adjacent

to a Temple(!)near the banks of the river Gomti.

I have stayed in the Holy City of Benares and once happened to cross this area

on my way to Padav near the banks of the river Ganges. The whole area is crowded

with not one but several slaughter houses....the filth and stench just makes you

giddy. The sight of numerous trucks with the hides and body parts of animals

makes it a horrendous sight!!!! I wonder what the authorites have to say about

that!!!!

(IN): ALLAHABAD: The slaughter house of Allahabad Municipal

Corporation (AMC) in Atala has become a bane for locals.

Having born in Atala and having spent my childhood there, I can recall all

that has been written in this report below.Horrifying sightings of open

truckloads with buffalo/ cattle bones and other slaughterhouse wastes, cart

loads of the same being ferried down the lanes of Atala since morning

through the day.

The trucks would be parked many a times overnight and the stench would fill

the atmosphere.

Every 50 meters you would find roadside unauthorized butcher shops openly

selling body parts of cows & buffalo.

Well you would say whats so extraordinary about Allahabad, thats a common

sight in most of India.

The city of Allahabad has given the Indian nation its first Prime Minister &

many more Prime Ministers.

Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Sh.

Rajiv Gandhi, Sh. Gulzari Lal Nanda, Sh. Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Sh.

Chandrashekhar were all either born in *Allahabad*, alumni of Allahabad

University or elected from a constituency in Allahabad. As such Allahabad

has produced 7 out of 14 Prime Ministers of India.

Lastly Mr. Amitabh Bachchan the bollywood superstar also hails from

Allahabad and the very locality 'Atala' was once part of his constituency

from where he got elected as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Slaughter

house a bane for Atala residentsAshraf Jamal, TNN 14 July 2009, 11:06pm IST

ALLAHABAD: The slaughter house of Allahabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in

Atala has become a bane for locals. The poor sanitary conditions owing to

the existence of the slaughter house have further increased problems.

Further, norms for the establishment of a slaughter house too are being

violated here.

Though four sanitary workers employed by the Allahabad Municipal Corporation

but the slaughter house presents a picture of utter neglect. Pool of blood

interspersed with cow dung marks the entire area. Stench emanating from the

place makes it impossible to venture into the area without covering the

nose. Since the waste water coming from the slaughter house is heavily

polluted, such water should not be mixed with the normal drainage system.

There is urgent necessity for treating this water as per the sewage standard

norms laid down in the Bureau of Indian Standards.

But strangely, the heavily polluted waste water from the slaughter house

continues to come outside without any provision of treatment for it. This

water come through the drain located outside the premises of slaughter

house. Even the condition of this drain carrying the remains of the animals

is in a dilapidated state. Despite numerous complaints, the drain continues

to be in its old state and is often filled with filth and other materials

causing numerous problems to the residents.

Due to the customary practice, hides from the carcass of animals are removed

on the floor where there is high probability of contamination of meat.

Further, hides and hoofs are not immediately removed from the place.

Complaining about the lackadaisical attitude of the Allahabad Municipal

Corporation in solving the menace, Abdul Karim, resident of the area said,

" During morning hours, the entire area turns into a virtual hell as it is

not possible to venture outside the houses. The stench emanating from the

place is so bad that we have to shut our doors and windows.''

Shakeela Begum, another resident, was more vocal about the daily ordeal.

" Due to the insanitary conditions prevailing in the slaughter house and the

bad odour emanating from it, we have to keep the doors and windows of our

houses shut. Further, there is a looming threat of diseases. In fact, many

people have taken ill due to unhygienic conditions.' '

Abid Aziz, another resident, said, " It would be better if the AMC shifts the

slaughter house on the outskirts of the city so that we could be saved from

such unhealthy conditions.' ' According to the laid down norms, slaughter

houses should be established on the outskirts of the city away from the

population so that people do not come in contact with the pollutants and the

dead matter emanating from the slaughter houses.

The Atala slaughter house has become very old and is located in the midst of

a burgeoning population. In fact, it dates back to the British period when

the population was less and it was established what then formed the

outskirts of the city. But, with the passage of time, the area grew and soon

many houses came up around the slaughter house. Now, the area is heavily

populated.

Resentment is also brewing among meat sellers that the price of the beef has

shot up as most of the animals are slaughtered and then taken outside the

city for export purpose. However, less number of animals are reserved for

human consumption in the city.

Meanwhile, AMC municipal commissioner Ashok Kumar told TOI that proper

cleaning would be ensured at the slaughter house so that people do not

suffer. Regarding shifting of the Atala slaughter house, he said it is a

policy decision that has not been taken now.
