Guest guest
*The note below is posted with the permission of Ms. Belinda Wright:* In the last few days there has been lot of talk about wildlife crime on the Internet. Although this is a growing problem internationally, fortunately in India the problem is minimal. A highlighted website was buytigers.com. The domain of this website is registered by a young fellow in Italy and it is definitely a spoof. As strange as it seems, people create such websites to stir up outraged responses and drum up business for entirely different issues. It is true that tigers are bred in captivity outside India for the pet trade - particularly in the United States, where the practise is still legal. Practically all of these tigers have been bred for generations in zoo conditions; they are unfortunate " cocktail " tigers that have nothing to do with the conservation of wild tigers in India. This may well be an animal rights issue which can be taken up with the American authorities, but here in India I think it is important that we focus our attention on the pressing problems that are jeopardising the future of wild tigers in India.
