*Guwahati*: A police enquiry has been ordered into the torture and killing

of a stray dog by some youths here under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Act. The Kamrup (Metro) Sub-divisional magistrate has ordered the police to

investigate into the matter occurred last month. The inquiry was based on a

petition of animal activist Azam Siddique on the complaint of a young girl

Yasmin Ahmed that five youths tortured and beat the dog after it had bitten

one of them.

 

Though Yasmin single handedly managed to rescue the seriously injured dog by

chasing away the boys the dog died the next day, the petition said. Under

Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, it is a

punishable offence to either beat, kick, torture or cause any pain or

suffering to an animal inviting fine and imprisonment. (PTI)
