Vegetarian diet for dogs?

I agree with Merritt Clifton completely. Dogs are confirmed carnivores and

it is cruelty to feed them a vegetarian diet. My dog feeds on non vegetarian

food daily. I don't think humans should impose their moral values on

creatures who do not share them. Could anyone in their right senses, think

about vegetarian tigers and wolves? I do know there are vegetarian and vegan

dog and cat feed available in the market but I am not convinced of their

utility and efficiency. It might interest you to read this small extract

from a book written by Desmond Morris. I am in complete agreement with him :

*Recent attempts by well meaning vegetarians to convert their cats to a

meat free diet are both misguided and cruel. Cats rapidly become seriously

ill on a vegetarian diet and cannot survive it for long. The recent

publication of vegetarian diets recommended as suitable for cats is a clear

case of animal abuse and should be dealt with as such. *

was already the author of some fifty scientific papers and seven books

before completing The Naked Ape in 1967, which has sold over 10 million

copies worldwide. He is now one of the best-known natural history

presenters. *

Shubnobroto!

If the Dog is stray it may be eating everything (omnivorous) it is difficult to

make them Vegetarian. If The Pup is given Vegetarian food just from Begining it

is no cruelty, as it is also cruelty to breed the dogs for pet trade and making

them captive too. However if the Dog starts non veg food from its early days and

it is difficult to wean the non veg Food and its liking. Giving them stale

readymade food is also Cruelty.

How Ever cats can not be Made Veg.

I'd like to echo Sean (regarding how interesting this thread is) and

encourage more discourse on the subject!

I am a vegetarian and I feed my dog a lot of fruit and veg but also meat

because i feel (incorrectly??) that he requires it to be fully healthy. I

am very interested to hear if this is fact or not because I too feel guilty

everytime I buy meat for him and, despite loving him, i dont feel his life

is worth more than the chicken's/lamb's etc. I would love to read proof

that dogs can survive and thrive on a vegetarian diet.

Does anyone know of an actual study on dogs' health history against diet?

Plus am I supporting the meat trade if I buy (for example) roasted knuckle

bones for him? Or am I taking up the left overs that would be produced

anyway by an enormous meat producing industry? This is what I'd like to

think of course!
