Guest guest
Officially India may have not indulged in the mass culling of elephants in one go like some African nations. But a slow yet committed practice of targeting wild elephants and eliminating them as 'Rouge' is an age old practice that India believes more in rather than willing to work towards improving the habitat of the jumbos. The elephant, according to the forest department, had wrecked havoc and killed three villagers and destroyed large stretch of agricultural fields and houses in Barjora, Sonamukhi and Bishnupur range areas in the past two months. The Bankura (North) forest division, for the purpose, forwarded an appeal to the state’s chief wildlife warden last week. Incidentally, the chief minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, while inaugurating the state wide " Aranya Saptaha " at Beliatore in Bankura on 14 July had declared that his government would not allow killing of elephants under any circumstances. It is one of those 14 residential elephants which are roaming between Barjora and Bishnupur forests presently. The DFO, Bankura (North), Mr Kulian Daivel, said: “The elephant has been causing severe difficulty in the Barjora, Sonamukhi and Bishnupur areas. We have noticed a sudden behavioural change in it. We are still preparing a database on the movement and attitude of the tusker, although it appears to be a rogue primarily.” He said: “We didn’t want to kill it. But the negative developments have compelled us to look for the option. However, we shall take mass consensus before going for an ultimate decision.” On 27 February 2003, a maljurian tusker was knocked down at Anantabati jungle in Sonamukhi range after it had killed 12 persons. In 1999, a tusker was killed in Basudebpur beat areas in Bishnupur. -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
