Thrissur: An elephant named Sooryan turned violent at the Chirackal Kottam

Thiruvanikkavu Bhagavathy Temple near Cherpu on Tuesday. Thekkoottu

Surendran, 38, and Valakkada Asokan, 52, who were on the elephant, fell off

and sustained injuries. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. The elephant

was soon brought to control. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Wildlife

Warden, the Kerala Elephant Lovers’ Association on Tuesday alleged that the

elephant was partially blind and was being ill-treated by its owner.

 

Staff Reporter writes from Alappuzha: An elephant brought for the festival

at the Nalpetheneeswaram Temple near Poochakal, Cherthala, ran amok in the

wee hours of Tuesday, injuring its mahout. The elephant, Adi Shankaran, was

brought from Pala for the festival. According to locals, the elephant turned

violent and ran amok around 2.30 a.m., goring the mahout who tried to pacify it.

The mahout was rushed to a private hospital in Ernakulam.
