Guest guest
The " Together we can " message recently distributed to the AAPN list by someone using the name " Tsu Shang Ko " is a textbook example of the sort of e-mail that prudent people discard on receipt. Here is why: >Since I'd written to Jill Robinson a few years ago, I have been receiving >AAPN emails on a daily basis. Note that Jill Robinson's name is dropped, in a context superficially sounding as if " Tsu Shang Ko " and Jill Robinson have some sort of relationship -- while never actually stating any such thing. > I read about the suffering of other living creatures and I read >about the wonderful work and the die-heart dedication you all have >in making our world a better place for all living creatures. Note the indiscriminate and inspecific flattery. >My name is Tsu Shang Ko (known as Shang), I would like your opinion and >support on a project that I am working on. The project involves securing a >continuous avenue of donations and connection to a larger pool of potential >volunteers for your organization. If " Tsu Shang Ko " had any ability to deliver any such thing, " Tsu Shang Ko " would not be sending out generic solicitations to e-mail lists to try to drum up business. >With a system in place and your participation, we will be able to generate >funds for your organization on a continuous basis. The project can bring >awareness and donations for your organization on a global basis. Note the complete absence of specific information offered in support of a vague and grandiose promise. >I'm not overstating the possibilities when I say that we can generate over >Seventy Million Dollars per day, everyday! How would a bit of that benefit >your organization? Note that this hypothetical revenue stream exceeds the revenue stream of any nonprofit organization in the world, and any corporation, for that matter. >I will provide more details if you are interested in this project. I'm interested, all right. I'd like to know the complete identity and history of " Tsu Shang Ko " as an alleged fundraiser, if any such history exists, documented by IRS Form 990 filings or the equivalent documents from other nations. >Please help me so that I can help generate funds for your >organization. I will be submitting this concept to Oprah Winfrey in >mid September of 2008. If you would like to support or be part of >this project, please contact me and also write to Oprah and ask for >her support. Here we have another empty promise, another bit of name-dropping, and an attempt to involve recipients of the e-mail in a pointless and useless activity -- a favorite tactic of scammers, because once people invest time in a project, they tend to feel more familiar with it, and therefore become more trusting of it, even when they should be having exactly the opposite response. >Perhaps this is an unusual way to gather support; I do know in my >heart that this is good for the health of our earth and the >wellbeing of our fellow creatures. Most of all, it is good for >humanity to begin the healing. Again, note the buzz words and lack of specific information. This looks to me like an invitation for AAPN rs to expose themselves to " phishing. " -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O. Guest guest
Dear Merritt Clifton: I do appreciate your detailed breakdown of my email so now I know how some people may be thinking when they read my email. In the future I will do better in addressing the issues/concerns that you have highlighted. Just so everyone out there can understand why I'd written to the AAPN group instead of an individual organization or anyone else for that matter. I wrote to Jill Robinson (just once) a few years ago asking about how I can help. Jill was nice enough to add me (Diversinparadise) to the AAPN group and since then, I have been receiving AAPN emails on a daily basis. I'm sorry if I had given you the impression that I knew or had some kind of a relationship with Jill Robinson. Prior to receiving emails from the AAPN group, I didn't even know of its' existence. On many days, after reading AAPN emails, I become very sad and very angry. In my heart I know I want to do something but for whatever reason/excuse, nothing is done with the exception of talking to many people about what I'd learned. There are many people just like me out there with all the good intentions but lacking in real action. This is where this project comes in. All those people that have good intentions will now have a very easy way to be a part of something great and wonderful. Namely to support non-profit organizations like yours in order to help other living creatures and other human beings too. I believe I have come up with a great way for non-profit organizations to generate donations on a continuous basis and reach new volunteers. So this is why I am looking for support from you and Oprah. I will be contacting Oprah in mid September as I have stated and can only hope that she will see the benefits of this project. But in any case, because I truly believe in what I am doing, I will succeed one way or another. Please do not let my lack of vocabulary, proper grammar or just good English take away from the true nature of this project. As I have stated, I know in my heart that what I will do is a good thing *so time will be my side*. You are welcome to wait it out and see for yourselves. When things look right to you, please feel free to contact me then. I thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my original email. Your questioning only serves to strengthen my conviction for this project so I truly thank you for that. I hope that I will be able to demonstrate that sometimes, just sometimes, a good thing will come along and all we need to do is to believe in it.
