FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY: Perhaps many of you will not like to read this or may not find it acceptable, but, I have certain points to make. Some animal lovers feed & look after stray dogs while their society members & family members oppose them. Although their intentions are noble, it comes at the cost of opposition from others. Finally, this opposition comes to the extent of beating the animals, poisoning them, abandonment & has also seen heinous activities such as pouring acid or hot water on poor stray animals. In most of the cases which I handled, I found that the animal lovers have to keep on fighting with society or colony people. I wonder why dogs/cats should be the victims of human ire/rage. Some of us feel compassionate about animals; our neighbors might hate them, but what about the animals who become victim of this human conflict? If you really love & care about the animals, especially dogs, then you can feed & look after them in better ways. 1) Visit a local shelter - feed sheltered animals or sponsor their food for one day. 2) Adopt a Stray dog - adopt a stray dog or a pup whose mother has died in some accident and who needs care, feed it at your home. 3) Adopt an abandoned pet - you can adopt a pet that is abandoned by previous owners, surely you can give a better home to that dog, feed it & take its care. 4) At last, if you really want to feed the dogs, please take care that it should not become nuisance to others, instead of society premises, you can feed them in particular place outside the society where there is less human traffic. Get all the strays sterilized, also get them vaccinated against rabies. Take the help of NGO's in this regard but avoid fighting. Convince your society members that the dogs already living in can become good watchdogs & cats can control the rat population. Instead of feeding dozens of animals - adopt one stray, raise one stray & feed and look after one. The joy of such a PET can bring a smile on your face & happiness in both the lives. Just think over it! Regards, Nilesh PAWS 2.
