Police have held 46 agitators. According to the police, the sanghatana had submitted its demands to the Animal Husbandry department. DCP (zone II) Satish Khandare said a delegation discussed their demands with the government authorities. “The delegation returned and briefed the agitators. Some of them were not convinced and turned violent. Five cops were hit by stones,” he added. Additional police force was called in and police resorted to lathi-charge making the agitators ran helter and skelter, damaging furniture and food items in the Central Restaurant nearby. When contacted, Dadasaheb Zagde, commissioner of Animal Husbandry department said, “After the discussion, the government veterinary officers decided to stop the agitation. Private veterinarians including diploma holders who wanted to be registered with the government so that they could practice, wanted the agitation to continue.” He further added, “The diploma holders usually treat animals for minor ailments. As per law, they are not authorised to practice. So we cannot consider their demands. This led to the stone-pelting.” -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
