Guest guest
Friday May 8, 2009-The Star FFF refuses to give up on abandoned dogs By WANI MUTHIAH PORT KLANG: Animal sanctuary Furry Friends Farm (FFF) are determined to rescue every one of the 400-odd dogs abandoned in Pulau Tengah, says founding director Sabrina Yeap. FFF, she added, would continue with its mission although she had only managed to rescue one dog over the past few days despite various attempts. “Most people may regard this as a disappointment but for us, it is one more live saved,” said Yeap. She was accompanied by several volunteers including blogger TV Smith to rescue the dogs abandoned on the island by Pulau Ketam residents. The residents had trapped and dumped the dogs on Pulau Tengah in March as part of an effort to curb the stray population in the island. They had meant to be kind as they were uncomfortable with the way stray dogs were exterminated by local council staff. The incident has since grabbed international attention. Many people around the world had sent money to Yeap to aid her rescue mission, while animal welfare groups have also visited both the islands and embarked on their own rescue missions. However, rescuers are finding it difficult to get to the dogs because the island is surrounded by a mangrove swamp which prevents entry into the deeper parts of the island where the dogs are hiding. Meanwhile, Maria Fernandez Salom from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), Asia-Pacific, when contacted, said her organisation was aware of the critical situation in Pulau Tengah. “We are working on collaborating with local groups to help as much as we can,” she said. Local non-governmental organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII) director Firoza Buranudeen hoped local authorities in Malaysia would look into establishing a trap, neuter and release (TNR) programme able to gradually reduce the number of strays. TNR programmes have been successful in places such as Bali, Bhutan and Nepal.
