A short-term contract of three months is being allowed for three prominent AWGs who have been involved in the programme since the beginning, giving the latter the leeway they were seeking, BBMP sources said. Animal Welfare Group representatives confirmed that a letter to this effect was sent to them in the second week of April but noted that things haven’t progressed thereon. The ABC programme has been affected since the previous contract expired in late January, with the AWGs pinning for a hike in their rates. The AWGs wanted the BBMP to take note that a proposal on revision of the rate fixed by the Animal Welfare Board of India (in 2003) is pending before the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. The BBMP on its part chose to stick to things as it stands - the AWBI rate of Rs 445 per dog. In extracting a short-term three-month contract, the AWGs have bought themselves some time. The BBMP is meanwhile left with a shortterm solution. A BBMP official noted that besides the earlier players CUPA, Karuna and ARF, two new groups will be part of the ABC programme in the city now. Dr Mondal’s group which is active in north India and the Veterinarians for Animals from Maharashtra have also been issued the tender for three months to begin with. The AHF which had joined the programme mid-way has meanwhile picked the tender for a full two-year period at the prevailing rate of Rs 445 per dog, sources said. -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
