*Please find the letter by Mr. Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe

Conservation Task Force written to the concerned authorities drawing concern

on the Giraffe death and CZA Chief`s remarks:*

Dear Sirs

I have recently heard of an incident whereby an African giraffe was

electrocuted by and overhead wire whilst being transferred from one zoo to

another in India.

I was shocked to learn that a spokesman for the Central Zoo Authority in

India declared that he was only concerned with Indian endangered animals. It

is very distressing for us in Africa to know that our animals are going to a

place that has no compassion for them, just because they come from Africa.

How can one discriminate against an animal in this way? I find it very

difficult to believe. Would the people of India be happy to know that they

had sent one of their beautiful tigers to Africa and it was mistreated

because it was the wrong nationality?

The method of transportation of the giraffe seems very unprofessional and

why was it transported at night when overhead wires are not visible? What is

the purpose of the Central Zoo Authority? Does it not concern itself with

animal welfare or does it only care about certain animals?

Apparently another African giraffe also died in a similar manner.

I believe these giraffes came from Kenya and I intend to bring this incident

to the attention of the Kenyan authorities and anyone else who may be

sending animals to India.

Yours sincerely

Johnny Rodrigues

*An update Kenya joins:*

Mr. Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force has

confirmed that Kenyan group " The Green Belt Movement " is liaising with

their advocacy section for further action on the Central Zoo Authority

Chief`s comments on the issue of disowning responsibility towards non-Indian

species and the Giraffe death in Kolkata.

2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner Ms.Wangari Maathai is the founder of the Green

Belt Movement.
