Guest guest
http://www.spca.org.hk/eng/news/showDetail.asp?id=817 SPCA (HK) Veterinary and Rescue Teams Arrived in Chengdu Provide Assistance and Advice on Rescue and Disease Control (HONG KONG, 28 May 2008) A team of seven from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) [sPCA (HK)], made their second visit to Chengdu, China on 27 May 2008. The team, comprising the Inspectorate Superintendent, the Chief Inspector, two Inspectors, two from the veterinary team and the Deputy Director of China Outreach, brings animal rescue kits and personal protection equipment, which are scarce in the affected areas, as well as experience and expertise in animal rescue and capture, care and handling techniques, vaccination protocols and welfare measures on sheltered animals, to help the local authority in enhancing disease control measures to safeguard the well-being of surviving victims from the recent earthquake and after-shakes. Ms Doris Yiu, Deputy Director of China Outreach met with representatives and volunteers from the local animal shelters as well as from the Animals Asia Foundation in her first visit to Chengdu on 21 May, during which Ms Yiu shared basic animal handling skills with local volunteers, assisted in rescuing and collecting more than twenty animals and helped in compiling proposal submitted in writing to the governor of the Sichuan Province to help vaccinate the animals as a preventive measure to control the development of rabies and plagues in disaster areas. The authority accepted the proposed concept and local veterinarians returned to Dujiangyan to being the vaccination work. Based on the onsite assessment during the SPCA's first visit, an animal rescue team and veterinary support was quickly pulled together and in less than forty-eight hours geared up rescue and capture equipment specifically made in-house and other needed equipment for the second visit. The team is charged with the mission to pass on their professional expertise in animal rescue and handling, vaccination protocol and long term care needed for the sheltered animals, equipping volunteers and staff from the local animal shelters to expand their search and support to more areas in need of support. The team, scheduled to return end of this week, is prepared to prolong the period of stay or pay more visits if needed, and will leave the rescue equipment to the local organizations. Members of the public can visit the SPCA's website (www.spca.org.hk) for frequent update on the latest situation in Sichuan area.
