Guest guest
Dear Kirsten, I do believe in open and honest dialogue but I am concerned about the platform you used for expressing your arguments since the World Conservation Trust(formerly International Wildlife Management Consortium)(http://www.iwmc.org) is pro hunting, pro sealing, pro ivory trade, pro turtle egg collection, pro tiger farming and pro crocodile farming. I have not come across anything relating to animal welfare or rights on that website and that is where Sunita Narain wrote about tiger conservation. (http://www.iwmc.org/IWMC-Forum/Articles/050318-1.htm) I have a keen interest in human rights myself and feel we should always keep human interests in mind when we think of animal rights/welfare/conservation but where I have a problem with groups like IWMC is that they ONLY have human interests in mind and encourage cruelty to animals and look away from humane alternatives that exist. That approach is surely just as wrong as looking only at animal rights whilst ignoring human rights. IWMC promotes human chauvinism and scientifically speaking there is no evidence to support it unless one believes in anthropocentrism, an outdated and outmoded precept. I personally cannot support or condone cruelty to animals in the name of protecting human rights like IWMC does because I think alternatives exist in the vast majority of these cases, eg., sealing, ivory, tiger parts, turtle egg collection, crocodile farming etc. They can all be replaced sustainably using humane alternatives that promote animal welfare but such schemes are persistently ignored by IWMC. Sunita Narain's organisation, Centre for Science and Environment also promotes human chauvinism. They support crocodile farming, exploitation of tiger reserves for the ostensible benefit of tribals and killing silkworms for silk production. No wonder she made the Tiger Task Force appear like a Tribal Task Force. She and her organisation have not shown much respect for animal welfare or rights. Since you say you are interested in animal welfare you might want to rethink using IWMC as a platform to air your views. Barun Mitra I can understand since he believes animals don't have rights. Please do let me have your thoughts on this. Best wishes,
