PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN : A Royal Forest Department employee has been caught

red-handed poaching wildlife.

He was nabbed while camping in a forest reserve area in Prachuap Khiri

Khan with four other poachers after they had killed a number of langurs.

A forest patrol squad found Anothai Kasemsukpaisal, 43, and the other

four men in an area of the Kui Buri national forest reserve and took

them to the police yesterday.

Found along with some rifles in their tents were the dead bodies of four

langurs which had already been smoke-preserved, said Boonlue Poonnil,

chief of Kui Buri National Park.

Mr Boonlue led the patrol team into the forest after having received a

report that a group of people from Bangkok accompanied by some locals

had sneaked into the forest to hunt illegally.

The forest area in which the five entered and killed the animals is

where a rehabilitation programme has been undertaken by a royal project

to revive wildlife diversity.

" Shame on them, His Majesty the King has spent more than a decade to

revitalise this forest successfully, " said Mom Chao Ying Rangsibhadol

Yukol, who oversees the royal project at Kui Buri National Park.

Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Panchai Bovornratanapran said the five

suspected wrongdoers, particularly the Royal Forest Department employee,

would face tough legal action.

Department chief Somchai Pienstaporn said that he had sent a team to

look into the case.

If the staff member was found guilty, he would be fired.

" We have a clear policy that state officials who make a mistake will

face legal action and disciplinary punishment.

We will end the case swiftly, " said Mr Somchai.

He asked for cooperation from local people to tell him about any other

illegal actions of the department's staff.

" The local people know best. They should immediately inform us if there

are any irregularities, " he added.

I feel the chance is very small that anything will happen to these guys.

With the head office of ASEAN-WEN in Bangkok you would expect that action

will be taken to set an example but to give a few examples why i don't think

anything will happen;

September 2008 raid on illegal zoo 80 wildlife found, of which 34 proven

illegal including one orangutans. 24 animals taken away, no court case, zoo

still open.

January 2009 raid on zoo in Phuket, after weeks of negotiations 11

orangutans taken away. No legal case made, no court, zoo still open.

I feel that the poachers that were arrested yesterday are now free on bail,

and maybe will get a 100 dollar fine, if the case goes to court....
