*200 experts to converge at Rajasthan’s Ranthambore Park*

SARISKA: India is to host a unique global summit on tigers next year to

create awareness among the world’s nations about conservation of these

highly-threatened animals. As many as 200 experts from the world over are

expected to participate in the summit to be held in Rajasthan’s Ranthambore

National Park in October-November 2010.

Union Forests and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, who announced the

proposed summit at the opening session of the all-India meeting of field

directors of tiger reserves at Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan’s Alwar

district on Saturday, said Ranthambore turned out to be the lucky venue as

another strong contender to host the event was Kanha National Park.

The tiger conservation efforts have many supporters including World Bank

president Robert B. Zoellick who has launched the Global Tiger Initiative

but India may not seek any financial support in this regard from the World

Bank, Mr. Ramesh said.

“We are not taking any lessons also in this regard as India, with 70 per

cent of the world’s tiger population, knows how best to conserve them,” he

said.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin wanted to adopt India’s conservation

methods in his country, he noted.

Elaborate tiger estimation will be carried out in India prior to the event

and its results would be presented there.

Mr. Ramesh said he wanted the estimation exercise to be done by dividing the

tiger areas into three different categories and each of them executed by

different agencies.

In core tiger areas, up to 40,000 sq km, intensive sampling will be done

with the help of camera trapping by officials, experts and conservation NGOs

while in an area over 150,000 sq km a survey will be done by the Wildlife

Institute of India. Various Forest Departments will do the tiger survey in

another 170,000 sq km area in the country to know the status of the animal,

he added.
