Prime Minister of Egypt

Ahmed Nazif

2 Magles El Shaab St., Kasr El Aini St.

Cairo

Egypt

Your Excellency,

I am writing to request the immediate suspension of the cruel cull of pigs being

carried out in Egypt.

Culling is not necessary since there is no known link between the recent

outbreak of swine flu and pigs. However, regardless of the reasons behind the

cull of entire Egyptian pig population, I object strongly to the handling and

slaughter methods of pigs shown in recent news coverage.

Cruel and inhumane methods involved in the cull, including pigs being hit with

iron bars, kicked and burned alive with chemicals, are not acceptable.

Transport, handling and slaughter of these animals should follow the World

Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines for humane slaughter methods, as

agreed by Egypt and all other member countries of the OIE.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is able to provide

technical advice and assistance in terms of relocating these pigs, including

humane transport and handling. For ailing pigs not fit for relocation, the

Egyptian government should explore humane killing methods.

I urge Your Excellency to stop the pig cull.

Yours sincerely,

Khalid Mahmood Qurashi
