The song was written by Maria Daines who also contributed for >the elephant polo cause. Jonah as many of you will know died in Turkey after >being dumped in a rubbish van. This is factually incorrect. A complete account of what actually happened, by Garo Alexanian of the Companion Animal Welfare Network, will appear in the edition of ANIMAL PEOPLE, going to press next week. An initial report circulated that Jonah the dog was crushed in a rubbish van, which was done to several other dogs in another part of Turkey last summer, but a video of the incident confirmed the local account that Jonah had apparently been hit by a car. After residents of the city of Van asked that the injured dog be removed from their neighborhood, a rubbish hauling crew placed on the rear lip of their rubbish van and took him to the dump to join another dog, crippled in the same manner, who had already lived there for some time, apparently scavenging an adequate living. Contacts already well known to Alexanian then rescued both Jonah and the other dog. Jonah died a week later from the severity of his injury, despite surgery meant to save his life. The other dog is apparently recovering, and has been promised a home. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O. Guest guest
Jonah had been hit by a car and his back legs were broken, he suffered for days before city workers were deployed to take him to the dump. They dragged him to the rubbish truck with ropes around his neck and he cried in pain all the way, his spinal cord was damaged irreparably with this action. They then hoisted him into the truck with the aid of a shovel. Pictures available here: http://fotogaleri.hurriyet.com.tr/galeridetay.aspx?cid=17682 & rid=2 There is no way anyone can condone this action, there is no excuse for it. The images speak for themselves. 2008/12/5 Merritt Clifton <anmlpepl > >I leave it up to John to decide on this message, Turkey comes under > both Asia > >and Europe. But the images do not show that Jonah was " dumped in a rubbish van, " which is the point of factual inaccuracy, or that he was " crushed in a rubbish van, " as misguided activist alerts told the world. What the images do show is that two elderly rubbish haulers who have lived their entire lives in a region with endemic rabies took every possible precaution to remove the dog while avoiding any possibility of being bitten -- aware, no doubt, that rabies in dogs and cats commonly results from a rabid animal biting their hindquarters as they run, and that in such cases the neurological damage often starts in the hindquarters. Jonah was not rabid, and the men presumably knew he was injured by a car, but as they were obviously not expert dog handlers, their efforts to avoid direct contact should be understood in the context of time, place, and acculturation. Dragging Jonah was obviously not the correct procedure to use in handling any animal with a spinal injury. Probably the best procedure to use if the only tools available were what showed in the photos would have been to carry Jonah all the way on the shovel. The shovel was the best way to lift Jonah to the rear lip of the van, which is where he is in the last photo, riding away -- not being crushed by people being deliberately cruel. Ignorance had a huge part in Jonah's fate. Intentional cruelty did not. If the rubbish haulers were being intentionally cruel, they could easily have killed Jonah on the spot and hauled away a carcass. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
