Sparrows - the bird we took for granted in our growing up years has suddenly gone missing from our cityscapes and people have hardly noticed. But we can begin saving them in our own little way by encouraging nesting spaces in our homes and a bird-friendly habitat. Bangalore is already feeling the pinch and its bad news gone to worse. ''Absence of sparrow indicates the climatic condition has gone beyond the human population where they can stay,'' said Harish Bhat, Ornithologist at IISc. Buildings of concrete and glass, excessive use of polished rice and grains, pesticides, pollution<http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20080052394 & ch\ =6/9/2008%201:14:00%20AM#>, traffic have all driven the sparrows away. But a few people are on the job to get them back to the city. Shekhar, a conservator of forests said, ''We created some artificial nests and the artificial habitat which is conducive for sparrows, the tiled roof is the best habitat for them.'' Srivalli, a lecturer said, ''Since 2001, we have been putting grains on our balcony, it attracted pigeons<http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20080052394 & ch=6\ /9/2008%201:14:00%20AM#>at first and then towards 2005, the sparrows came.'' -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
