Guest guest
>Also there may be things attributed to Gandhi that are unsubstantiated. For >example, his quote(very popular in the West), " " The greatness of a >*nation*and its *moral progress can be judged* by the way its >*animals are treated.* " Jon Wynne-Tyson in The Extended Circle: A Commonplace Book of Animal Rights, sources that quote only to " The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism. " In 2003 I tried unsuccessfully to track it to a specific source. I learned that Gandhi wrote many different articles and several short books of essentially the same title, summarizing the same arguments in different ways, & also delivered many hundreds of lectures and speeches of the same title -- dozens, for example, within a matter of days of each other, when he visited England circa 1936. Gandhi also gave discussed " The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism " in innumerable news interviews. This was apparently among his favorite topics for at least 30 years, probably longer. I did not find the exact quote in any of the examples and reportage of Gandhi's speaking that I found. However, Gandhi certainly talked all around this idea time & again, & probably did use very nearly those words, if not exactly those words, at least once. After all, there are only so many ways to phrase a thought, and the thought clearly was on his mind. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
