Guest guest
The elephant mafia in Kerala has got one more martyr Online edition of India's National Newspaper Wednesday, Mar 18, 2009 ePaper <http://epaper.thehindu.com/> *Elephant left to starve dies * A Correspondent *Sad end: The elephant which died at Kottuvally on Tuesday * North Paravur: A 53-year-old domesticated elephant, Chalakka Mohanan, that was left to starve without fodder and proper treatment at Kottuvally, near North Paravur, died on Tuesday. The condition of the elephant, which had been ailing for more than 30 hours, worsened on Tuesday afternoon and the end came at 3.30 p.m. despite valiant efforts by the people. The elephant, owned by Anwar Saddath of Perumbavoor, was reportedly brought here on lease by a middleman to parade in temple festivals. The Kodanad forest range officer said the condition of the pachyderm got worsened after being neglected by its caretakers. There were no legal provisions to hire a domesticated elephant on lease by a middleman. Investigation had found that the mahout was not properly trained and he had been booked for not possessing a licence under captivity management rules, besides the owner. A large number of people had thronged the place to see the elephant. Eyewitnesses alleged that the mahouts tortured the elephant in an inebriated state. They said the two mahouts escaped from the scene after sensing the death of the elephant. It is said that the same elephant had collapsed last week when taken for bath in a pool and was rescued with the help of local people. The carcass was burned after a post-mortem examination. The tusks of the elephant are with the Forest Department, officials said. ** Printer friendly page<http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/thscrip/print.pl?file=2009031855750800.h\ tm & date=2009/03/18/ & prd=th & >
Guest guest
Yes distressing to read! One thing we can continue to do from outside India is to continue to educate in our own western countries of the difficult future for India's elephants as there is little understanding of the challenges they face. See and buy CUPA's great book " Gods in Chains " which documents this and CUPA's ongoing captive elephant studies. http://www.cupabangalore.org/ElephantsInCaptivity.htm http://www.godsinchains.com/Gods_in_Chains/Home.html On another note, anyone reading the below list kindly note that Pradeep Nath's email is vspcadeep and the below one in gmail is nonexistent so please do not use it. Thanks! kind regards, www.vspca.org
