The forest department and the Allahabad Municipal Corporation are playing the blame game that catching monkeys is not within their purview and the people, particularly the children and the women continue to suffer. The problem of monkeys has arisen as their natural habitats are disappearing due to the increasing number of human settlements at the places which were earlier the abodes of animals. The three children were playing when the monkeys appeared and attacked them. The injured children are identified as Rohit Jaiswal, Anshu Kanaujia and Rahul Kanaujia. A child got severe wounds on the face. Luckily his eyes are safe. South Malaka, Azad Square, Dariyabad, Beniganj, Nai Basti, Nihalpur and adjoining areas face the problem. Monkeys are also active in Balaipur Railway Colony. Dariyabad has become synonymous with the monkey menace. People, particularly children, have become the target. Beniganj, Nai Basti, Nihalpur are also grappling with the problem. The problem has taken a menacing shape in the Balaipur Railway Colony which comes under North Central Railway. The residents have to face the simians also daily. Many railway offices are located in the vicinity. Employees and visitors to the electric Loco shed, office of railway electrification, Loco office, building of the erstwhile office of general manager and the public relations office of NCR face the monkeys daily. One can see cables which have loosened as the monkeys use them for climbing on buildings. Many equipment lying in the offices also get damaged. Khurshid Alam, working in the electric Loco shed behind the Balaipur Railway Colony said that the monkeys are sighted in the shed. Sometimes they also `visit' the office. AMC official CP Singh Kushwaha said that monkeys are categorised as wild animals and we are not responsible for catching such animals. The AMC has made a provision of Rs 1 lakh for catching monkeys but it has not been released, he added. The forest department has done nothing on this issue. Though a PIL has been filed by Vijay Chandra Srivastava of Allahabad High Court and notices have been served to the authorities of Allahabad Municipal Corporation and the forest department but these departments have not replied to the notices. -- http://www.stopelephantpolo.com http://www.freewebs.com/azamsiddiqui
