*Hero and dog killed by Taliban*

By JOHN KAY

Published: 26 Jul 2008

AN Army dog handler and his labrador were shot dead by the Taliban in a

firefight in Afghanistan, it was revealed yesterday.

The lance corporal from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was attached to 2

Para.

They were on a routine patrol in the Sangin area of Helmand province when

they were ambushed by sharp-shooters. The handler was killed and another six

soldiers — five from 2 Para and one from 3 Para — were hurt in the incident.

The sniffer dog was shot in the cross-fire. It was the first dog killed in

operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. One of the casualties suffered serious

injuries and is being airlifted to the UK for treatment.

The other five are returning to duties. Hundreds of spaniels and labradors

have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to sniff out arms and explosives.

One was so successful in Iraq insurgents made it an assassination target.

The death of the handler — set to be named today — makes 112 British

servicemen and women killed in Afghanistan since 2001.

Azam, thanks for that. I urge all to leave comments on newspaper sites like

the Sun¹s in protest of such use of animals. In this era of blogs and

feedback, it is one way of letting editors and other readers of the paper

how we feel about such nonsense. Cheers,

Jigs
