This practice is still prevalent in the Panchubarahi shrine located in sea erosion prone Satabhaya village under Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district. According to reliable sources, around 58 goats and sheep were sacrificed before the presiding deity of Maa Panchubarahi on the occasion of Parvana observed during the Chaitra Purnima festival recently. As per the ritual, devotees sacrificed goats and sheep in order to propitiate the goddess during Parvana on Chaitra Purnima so that the deity will protect the villagers from all dangers. According to locals, though the law-enforcing machine and the District administration are very much aware of the ritual, they prefer to remain mute witnesses as any step against the custom of animal sacrifice, which is regarded as a consummation of one’s prayers, will hurt the religious sentiments of the villagers. Sacrificing goats, lambs and hen before the altar is an age-old tradition during Parvana and Durga Puja in at least a couple of Shakti shrines located in Kendrapara district. Though the District administration deploys police every year to check killing of animals in the name of religion, the police remains a mute spectators. Devotees believe that animal sacrifice is the surest way to appease goddesses. Though laws have been framed to stop animal sacrifice, not a single person has been accused till now in the coastal district.
