Guest guest
http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200901280070.html Whale meat on sale at half price THE ASAHI SHIMBUN 2009/1/28 OSAKA--A department store here Tuesday began a special sale of whale meat at less than half its regular price, saying it was trying to ease consumer concerns about the economic crisis. The sale runs to the end of the month. In the first basement food section of the Hanshin Department Store near JR Osaka Station, shoppers could pick cuts from about 15 kilograms of sei whale meat and 90-centimeter strips of whale skin. For the sale, prices have been rolled back to the level of the early 1980s. For example, 100 grams of red whale meat, usually sold at 630 yen, sells for 248 yen. The same weight of skin, usually priced at 945 yen, is just 420 yen. Prices of whale meat have risen sharply since the International Whaling Commission imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986.(IHT/Asahi: January 28,2009)
