Besides, the city has topped the targets set for livestock care. ¡ÉWith no case of rinder pest disease being noticed, Chandigarh has been declared Rinder pest Free by the Government of India. The Animal Husbandry Department has also achieved success in controlling dreaded afflictions like rabies, foot-and-mouth disease and hemorrhagic septicemia and no case of these diseases has been reported in 2008-09¡í, Dr A..V.S. Kohli, Joint, Animal Husbandry, Chandigarh, said here today. Equipped with 14 veterinary hospitals and sub-centres, the Department has come a long way in providing health care to its livestock population which is estimated at 29,217. In practical terms, it means that Chandigarh has one veterinary unit for every 2,447 heads of livestock, informed Sanjay Kumar ,Secretary Finance and Animal Husbandry. Interpreting treatment as giving better health care to the livestock, the department has topped the targets in both preventive and treatment segments. During 2008-09, the department achieved more than prophylactic vaccinations against dreaded diseases like rabies, foot-and-mouth disease and hemorrhagic septicemia. Here go the targets and the achievements: Targets Achieved ARV 9000 9073 FMD 20000 21090 HS 18000 19000 Besides, the department also carried out 10,996 artificial inseminations through the frozen semen technology for breed improvement of indigenous cows and buffaloes under the Cattle Development Programme. The Union Territory has four veterinary hospitals for large animals; ten artificial insemination centres and nine veterinary sub-centres; one veterinary hospital exclusively for pet animals in Sector 22 and one bird care centre to provide cattle health, disease diagnosis and treatment and control of dreaded diseases. According to the 18th livestock Census 2007, the livestock population in Chandigarh is 29,217. The bovine population is 26,073 out of which cattle population is 6,505. Besides, there are 8,118 domestic dogs and 5,309 stray dogs. The People for Animals (PFA) has been allotted two acres of land at Raipur Kalan for setting up an animal welfare hospital to undertake animal birth control project for stray dogs.
