COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

R.A.K.S.H.A. (Revolutionaries Action Conservation Society For Helping Animals)

is a youth based NGO fighting for animal rights and welfare in Jaipur. Team

R.A.K.S.H.A. celebrated World environment week to unite citizens to combat

climate change.. The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You - Unite to

Combat Climate Change'. R.A.K.S.H.A. was able to educate over 4500 people during

the World Environment Week from 5th – 11th June’09 about climate change and

what they can do in their day to day activities to reduce their carbon

footprint, Importance of plantation, conserving wildlife, Plastic Removal

Programs. All the events were for the citizens to participate and learn as

seeing the problems at grass roots levels acts as an eye-opener and convincing

people is then a job done easy.

Our Events and Happenings for the WEW09 (World Environment Week 2009) are as

Follows:

5th June: Initiating conservation through PLANTATION Team R.A.K.S.H.A. planted

80 fruit bearing trees under Go Green Revolution inside Suresh Gyan Vihar

University . The trees were planted by citizens, university staff and

volunteers. An awareness drive about the importance of plantation was shared

with the people who planted the tree, how they help control air and noise

pollution, prevent soil erosion, help water harvesting, provide food, clothing,

shelter , shade, home for many living creatures and more importantly the only

rock solid solution to curb global warming in the quickest way. Team planted

fruit bearing trees like guava, peepal, Jamun, Anar, Mango, Sitaphal, Chikoo,

Imli, Shahtoot etc to improve the habitat of Birds around and develop SGNU as a

good birding place.

6th June: Initiating REVOLUTION for better living through conservation,

R.A..K.S.H.A. organised a Awareness Drive to curb (Global Warming) climate

change why it is happening, what a common man can do about it and how its

effecting the entire ecosystem. Brochures were given to people who were keen and

willing to know and were ready to change their day-to-day lifestyle in a way so

as to reduce their carbon footprints. A Bird Watching event was organised to

make people aware about the birds, their role in the ecosystem, habitat loss,

who is responsible and what can be done etc.

7th June: R..A.K.S.H.A. And Dept. Of Forest, Jhalana marked 7th June by

educational NATURE TRAIL & BIRD WATCHING  program at Jhalana forest area for

the citizens of Jaipur to develop and nurture compassion for wildlife. The aim

of this event was to promote conservation by the means of educational awareness

as " Without education, conservation is not possible " . Today where the present

wildlife scenario stands it’s not a matter of one or two individuals working

for conservation things have gone too far and needs to be introduced and

educated to the common man (for mass movements) without which the root causes

could never be solved like mining, poaching, Skin trade, human animal conflict,

habitat destruction, Overgrazing, fuel-wood demand etc. Under the program 23

participants ( max. group of three with one expert) were taken inside the

sanctuary on foot and were educated about basic Dos and Donts inside a wildlife

sanctuary, Species Identification,

natural habitat, eating patterns, numbers left in the wild, problems faced,

identification of animal through faeces and pug marks, what a common man can do

to save them, why on earth are they facing extinction?? Who is responsible??

8th June: R..A.K.S.H.A. And Dept. Of Forest, Jhalana marked 8th June by an

PLASTIC REMOVAL PROGRAM form Jhalana Forest Area.

Under the program 12 volunteers and 6 forest staff removed 20 sack bags filled

with plastic bags, bottles, thermacol from the forest area. A meeting with the

temple priest was held to consider and discuss how the problem of plastic bags

can be solved, how devotees need to be educated of the ill effects of plastic,

who is responsible, how its taking its toll on the wild animals, contribution in

climate change, how it renders the soil infertile etc.. and a plan was concluded

along with the department of forest for educating people at the main gate about

plastic with the help of flexs, photos.

9th June: Initiating conservation through awareness R.A.K.S.H.A. organised a

REPTILE CONSERVATION THORUGH AWARENESS PROGRAM at Jai Jawan Colony (It had a

record of 45 calls in a year). Over 100 people participated in the event and

were educated about species identification, venomous and non-venomous, myths and

fallacies, learn to live with the non-venomous species etc. Brochures were given

to the people present. Team R.A.K.S.H.A. planned to take the awareness programs

to a larger scale and cover the entire city and nearby villages as snakes are

more killed because of fear and ignorance than anything else in India …..

R.A.K.S.H.A. in association with Jaipur Zoo organised an awareness drive on

Global Warming ……working for a cooler planet for the visitors at Jaipur Zoo

Alternative for morning walkers of Jawahar Circle to participate and learn how

having a vegetarian diet helps protect the environment (Minimizes global climate

change),  Higher life expectancy, Healthy Heart Argument, Reduces Risk of

Cancer ,  When we have scientific as well as ethical reasons in favor of

vegetarianism then why we should not take a decision of switching over to

vegetarianism?

Let’s unite to Combat climate change…..let’s make a difference.

Please email in your queries and suggestions for making the events in a more

meaningful next year..

Alone we cannot, Together we can!
