Guest guest
Dear Padma, I am running ambulance service for strays since past 9 years now. Daily we get 4 injured animals calls. We ask everyone to contribute Rs.100/- per animal. Some people contribute & some not. We collect 40% of the required funds from road for running 2 ambulances in 5 suburb cities of Mumbai. It not he matter of poor or rich - affordable-not affordable. Our past experience shows that if a caller have respect & positive attitude then they contribute but collect even Rs.10/- for everyone. Some people sit in car, say wow...shoo cute... etc etc. cries when it come to donate Rs.100/-, but we attend all cases comes to us. But we make sure that such wealthy caller who does not pay get good from outside when he calls us next time. What we check is the caller's attitude towards cause! Regards, Nilesh padma [padmaeva] Sunday, April 19, 2009 2:13 AM aapn Bombay SPCA and lessons to be learnt After reading all the postings and all the links given, I reflected on our work in Kandy. All our volunteers just bring in rescues and animals to be sterilized, some get all their transport and telephone-expenses reimbursed by us and up to now not one of them has done anything for fundraising, but we know that they all are very sincere and none of them would ever try to take personal advantage of our group. However it's a valid question, which Merrit raised: someone has to do the fund-raising too. if all we do, is to rescue and to sterilize free of charge. strays and owned animals as well, if the owners can't afford it. it's not surprising that we are always on our last penny. and if the few kind people, who have supported our work up to now, suddenly would not be able to do so anymore, we would have to stop our work. Yet, with all the financial problems we face, I don't think charging fees from people, who want to get a stray treated, is a good way of getting an income because the only result will be, that more strays die on the street without receiving treatment. It may happen here too, that people ask us for help for an animal, saying that it is a stray, while in fact it is their own pet, but if we would ask them to pay, they would just leave it to suffer or dump it somewhere so that they don't have to see it suffering. I don't know whether this always works out (it worked for us up to now), but sincerity seems to be felt by someone out there. Some people have time to contribute, but no money, others have no time, but some money, which they give, so that those, who give their time, can do the work to be done. Forming a group to help animals makes it possible for these two kinds of people to meet.
