Smugglers arrested with monitor lizards

SHRAWASTI: Around 21 monitor lizards have been rescued from the clutches of

smugglers under Suhelwa wild life sanctuary. These lizards were to be carried

to China via Nepal, the cost of, which is estimated to be lakhs of rupees.

The forest team has arrested smugglers along with lizards and handed them

over to Sirsia police.

 

Kamlesh, Rakcharam, Ziledar and Maikoo resident of Badalpur village under

Sirsia police area after poaching were carrying the lizards.

 

On receiving the information the forest team caught the smugglers

red-handed. SDO forest Hemant Mani Shant leader of the team said that they

were getting information about poaching for past many days. The accused have

been booked under Indian wild life preservation rule (1972).

 

According to forest officer monitor lizards are boiled and its oil is

extracted to be used as energetic product. Its meat is in demand in India,

Nepal, China and many other countries. Its skin is also used for making

shoes, purse, bags and other items. China is stated to be the biggest market

of lizards.
