Your Chance to Help a Noble Cause 1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY: I am glad that many new people are entering the field of animal welfare & are eager to learn and volunteer. This was amply proved during our annual seminar 'Learn to Care'. It was a great success & many people traveled all the way from Pune, Roha, Karjat, Mira Road, Vasai & all corners of Mumbai. We had an audience of more than 60 people. A major part of this success goes to PAWS Trustee Manasi who took over PAWS helpline from me. Since I stopped handling the daily calls from dog lovers, it gave me time to do quality work for PAWS. In past 9 months, I was able to give much time towards team building events; monthly fundraising events, and designed new brochures while redesigning awareness programs. I focused on External (media, corporate etc for visibility, funding etc) & internal communication (team building, motivation) for PAWS, so that we can develop our lifeline that is more volunteers, supporters and donors. I started organizing rallies to spread awareness. The best effort was organizing a workshop successfully in which all NGO's participated. No wonder the core team and my staff Prabhu, Sonali & Darshak literally ran around to put everything in place! Some of the unique things innovated by PAWS includes the likes of building water troughs for strays, organizing fundraising movie shows, besides follow-ups for hospital. This had never happened in past 9 years. We also upgraded the PAWS office. Certainly, there are miles to go before we sleep, but we will still continue with the same commitment and compassion which has brought us till here. My faith has strengthened even more...Hands that help are holier than praying lips. For Cause of Creatures, Nilesh Bhanage Founder 2. YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE... 'BEAT THE HEAT' INITIATIVE FOR STRAY ANIMALS: Every summer, stray cattle, dogs and other animals thirst for water in the sweltering heat. This year, PAWS launched 'Beat the Heat' initiative which involves building water troughs near pavements and roadside edges. These are square-sized mud pots affixed to pavement corners & filled with water every day. Now the thirsting cow or working donkey, running cat or stray dog will have drinking water facility. The project is funded through local donations and managed by PAWS trustees Mr. Nilesh Bhanage, Ms. Anjali Ekbote and volunteer Ms. Amita Kulkarni. The task is to build hundred water troughs. This also has been informed to us by Maneka Gandhi's office. PAWS sent such photos & addressed a stern letter to the concerned health officer. 9. PAWS OFFICE UP-GRADATION : PAWS does not have its own animal hospital, so we do not feel the need to set-up a separate administrative office. Mr. Nilesh gave his flat's gallery to PAWS to use as its office. PAWS office bearers Sonali & Darshak use this premises. So this small office always receives many birds, pigeons & other small animals for treatment. We decided to upgrade this facility. We equipped office with new pet carriers & different graspers. Also a new fan was installed for the staff. After attending WSPA's Disaster Management seminar, PAWS installed 1 Fire Extinguisher in its office & 1 each in PAWS's two ambulances as part of emergency preparation. Also appropriate caller-tune has been set for Helpline number so that callers will understand that they have called the right number. Below are photos of our new office look & installations: http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Album.aspx?uid=11637720281533423481 & aid=1243 591084 10. PAWS 3RD WORKSHOP 'LEARN TO CARE': For those who believe in the power and exuberance of youth, the Plants & Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) of Dombivli serves as a constant source of inspiration. An NGO primarily run by a young brigade, with most of them in their mid 20's, organized an awareness workshop last Sunday bringing some of the most reputed NGOs under one roof. Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD), People for Animals (PFA), Govardhan Charitable Trust, Terra Animal Trust, Thane SPCA and Hariyali Trust are some of the big names that came together to enlighten 50 participants across the districts of Pune, Mumbai, Raigad and Thane. Starting 2pm, the banquet hall of Hotel Twins, venue of the workshop, saw Mr. Punam Singhvi open the show with his presentation on green vegetation and ecosystem. He neatly emphasized how his NGO Hariyali collected seeds on nature trails and excursions and sowed them along the pipelines and mountain slopes to do a world of good to the ecosystem of Thane district. The next speaker was Mrs. Shakuntala Majumdar, President of Thane SPCA who conducted a one-to-one session with the participants teaching them numerous ways to handle a case of animal cruelty. A small 15-minute break followed where participants relished a vegan snack. At 4.30pm, the 2nd session started with the most favorite topic amongst every participant - First Aid and medication of stray dogs hosted by Pooja Mishra of WSD. In addition to that, she shared some telephone numbers of homeopaths who can be consulted free of cost for homeopathy remedies least known for the treatment of animals in veterinary science. As she finished her session, it was time to get some serious lessons on the topic of herpetology by Mr. Kedar Bhide - A Hony. Sarpamitra from Forest Department. Why do people hold pre-conceived notions on the subject of snake rescue, how to bag a snake and what are the most suitable timings to release a snake as per its biological characteristics? Many such questions were answered by snake-man Kedar, who has dedicated more than half of his life to the rescue of snakes, It ignited a fresh spirit in the minds of people. On a closing note, he shared some of the best experiences of his life. Post this Mr. Manoj Oswal, founder of People for Animals, Pune who is also a vegetarian turned vegan took stage to make a sincere appeal to the masses in choosing vegetarianism and its benefits. Some amazing facts never known to ordinary man covered under his presentation were - a vegetarian has 50% less chances of suffering from a heart disease, even eating animals contributes to world hunger and how the whole ecosystem is disturbed when animals are slaughtered for the purpose of meat. Nilesh Bhanage, founder of PAWS Dombivli addressed the closing ceremony of the workshop, honored the guests with certificates and scented candles as a small token of appreciation. Amidst all the felicitation, Mrs. Rosalie Mallik from Govardhan Charitable Trust was the biggest name for her noteworthy contributions in the field of animal welfare. She is an American lady who has settled in India - runs a shelter for cattle in Roha spread over 40 acres of land and more than hundreds of cattle have taken shelter in her premises for a lifetime. With the evening all set, participants filled up forms, signing petitions on elephants wandering across the streets of Mumbai. They rated the overall preparations of the seminar, expressing it as one of the greatest days to remember in their lives. The 'Smart Volunteer Contest' saw some felicitations of energetic members in Team PAWS. The young brigade of Team PAWS who then took stage for a photo-opportunity were cheered by all the participants for their month long hard-work during the preparatory phase of this seminar and for making it a grand success.
