Dear Azam,

Tariq Aziz is currently in India. I have given him whatever

you have gathered and have also provided a short introduction to your

personal efforts regarding this. He tells me there have been some concrete

efforts done in Nepal, details of which he can send me when he returns to

Nepal tomorrow.

I will drop him an introductory email and copy you and it may be useful for

you to keep in touch with him since he is a giant in the conservation field.

Interestingly, he also has journalistic experience, having worked for the

IRNA news agency of Iran. He has written a lot of articles on wildlife and

used to contribute to the Statesman. I am sure he has expertise on the North

East as well.

He was pleasantly surprised when I told him that his article on Snow

Leopards in the Statesman made a deep impression on me as a child. In that

article he had suggested that Snow Leopards be rechristened as Rock Leopards

because they are sighted more often among rocks than snow!. When I talked

about this, he smiled and asked in Hindi, " Woh to bahut purani cheez hai,

aapko abhi yaad hai? " ( " That is a very old article, do you still remember

it? " ) My Hindi is quite lame, so I just replied, " Zaroor. Likhawa achha hone

se hamesha yaad rehta hai. " (Of course. If a writing is good, it remains

ingrained in you forever. " )

Brilliant work as usual. Do keep it up.

Best wishes and kind regards,
