This will probably be no comfort to Avis, nor to anyone else who is involved in rescuing pedigree dogs, but the history of pet-keeping right around the world indicates that keeping pedigree dogs typically explodes in popularity about a generation before keeping dogs of any kind as pets catches on among all strata of society, and about two generations before sterilizing pet dogs becomes almost universal. People seem to have to become at ease with purpose-bred dogs before learning to accept all dogs as potential pets. This should not be a necessary transitionary phase, but where it is occurring, the proliferation of pedigree dogs may be seen as a harbinger of better times ahead, even though it is not good news in the present & for the immediate future. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
