1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRTARY:

In 1998, I performed my first rescue operation. The victim was a pigeon,

attacked by crows. From that day, I started animal welfare as a hobby. I did

not realize when I became an animal activist, fighting for the cause of mute

creatures. Now a decade is over while trying to rescue animals & birds. Some

I could and some I could not. Lot of criticism & allegations came my way,

and I had my share of accolades as well.

My journey has been a bit slow in comparison to others. I faced hundreds

of obstacles while handling day-to-day activities of PAWS. The time has

come now to remember & recognize all those who supported me all these years

- My mentors Anamika Sengupta & Goodicia Vaidya, who taught me how to

rescue and treat injured animals. My Co-trustee Anuradha, who stood behind

me throughout all organizational ups & downs. My mother and my wife Mansi -

who took care not only of visitors on consultation visits but also of

animals who were brought home for treatment. Last but not the least, thanks

to Maneka Gandhi who is my true inspiration & also intervened whenever

required, right from firing local police to speaking with donors to help

PAWS. She helped in every way she could. Smt. Gandhi was an invaluable

support. I also thank Chinny Krishna for his support & all the PAWS

trustees, and volunteers. Their sheer presence gave me the strength to work

for the cause. Now after 10 years, I can proudly figure out the animals on

roads that have benefited from the services of PAWS - A brand created for

animal's welfare. Thank you all for speaking-up for the CAUSE & PAWS.

Wish you a happy New Year 2009!

Yours for Animals,

Nilesh Bhanage

volunteers & valuable supporters like you. Your contribution, however

small, but if it is on a monthly basis, will help make a difference in

the life of the injured animals.

3. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS:

# In December, the PAWS Dombivli-Kalyan ambulance rescued a total of 26

injured dogs, 1 cat, 3 pups & took 3 dogs for sterilization despite van

breakage occurring several times. PAWS office also received a Barn Owl from

Mr. Sunil Mandhre on 4th December 08. On 11th December Shafee Bhure brought

2 owlets which were rescued from a factory. PAWS sent those owls for further

rehabilitation to local SPCA. On 6th Janauay Dhaval brought a pigeon & Samir

Nevgi also got another one. On 29th December volunteer Saurabh Chougule got

a pigeon which was taken to pigeon shelter after treatment. On the last day

of the year i.e. 31st December, PAWS volunteer Bhartesh brought an injured

Owl to office which was died on its way to hospital.

# PAWS office received a call from Parinita, a new volunteer with PAWS, that

a stray dog with maggot-wounds was seen in one of the buildings at MIDC. At

that time, PAWS van was in the garage. Hence, Parinita decided to rescue the

dog along with Sonali. They were able to capture the dog after a marathon

two hour effort. The dog is recuperating at the center right now.

# Sangam and Priti rescued a dog from Ulhasnagar at night. The dog was

suffering from cancer. They took dog all the way from Ulhasnagar to Thane by

auto. The entire virginal portion was bleeding. They admitted the dog at

Thane hospital at 11 pm. PAWS appreciates such volunteer efforts.

# PAWS Volunteer spotted a dog at Kalyan railway station whose eye was

gouged out & it was in immense pain. Another maggot-wounded dog was found by

Satwan Kaur in kalyan where the maggots had infested the head. Both dogs

could not be caught in first ambulance call. Ultimately, PAWS volunteer

Rupesh Nair along with Sanmit and Bhavesh rescued both the dogs after an

effort of 3 hours.

# Founder of 'Terra Anima' Animal welfare organization in Ooty, Roxanne

Davar currently resides in neighboring Raigad district. While traveling by

train she spotted a man illegally carrying a pig & a cute little piglet

cruelly tied in closed plastic bag. She filed an FIR in Neral Railway police

station. PAWS immediately sent the ambulance to Neral to rescue the pig &

piglet. Both were sent to Thane hospital.

# In another case, volunteer Siddhesh rescued a pup which was supposed to be

killed for religious beliefs. Kudos to the boy who rescued the pup, got it

treated from local vet, got the women arrested, filed an FIR in police

station, and all the way carried to Mumbra. Then with the help of PAWS

ambulance the pup was admitted to SPCA for recuperation. The story link is

added in below section.
