Dear NGO'S & Animal Lovers,

Please see below article. The state govt. wants to shift the 2 crocodile

which are living in Thane Lake (since past 20 years) to somewhere else.

We all have to join the protest against this move. Please write a letter

to Forest minister stating 'The Crocodiles had not harmed anyone till

the date & make fencing around lake'. In Transit or new habitat they

will die.

In mass urbanization of this area, the (only) crocodiles have kept their

existence. Over the years never harmed anyone & or any animal as they

get ample food in water.

Please write a letter immediately & post it to below address

[mumbainaturalists] 'Move crocs out of Thane lake'

State Legislative Council deputy chairperson Vasant Davkhare - who

recently made the administration work overtime to change the

abbreviated signboards at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Lokmanya

Tilak Terminus - has now issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state

government to shift two crocodiles out of a Thane lake.

Davkhare issued the suo motu order, asking the government to remove

the crocodiles immediately from Upavan lake in Pokhran Road area of

Thane (West), as they posed a danger to swimmers. The lake is also

used to immerse Ganesh idols.

For several years, a notice put up at the lake warned people about the

crocodiles, but no action was taken to shift them. " There are two

crocodiles in the lake. I received complaints about it over a year ago

and had written to the government. The forest department acknowledged

the problem, but raised queries as to whether the crocodiles had

harmed anyone. But why should we wait for an attack? I have instructed

Forest Minister Babanrao Pachpute to take immediate action, " Davkhare

said.

Pachpute has agreed to act on Davkhare's directives and said experts

from Hyderabad will be summoned to capture the crocodiles and shift

them elsewhere. " The experts are now in Pune, and will be called to

Mumbai. Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) J P Dange called me, and I

will discuss the issue with him on Tuesday, " Davkhare said.

According to environmental activist Mayur Kamat, the Upavan lake is

not an ideal habitat for crocodiles. " It is surrounded by buildings.

Crocodiles come out of water bodies to bask in the sun. But nobody has

seen these crocodiles in the area surrounding the lake, though they

have been sighted in the water, " Kamat said.

had harmed anyone. But why should we wait for an attack? - Vasant

Davkhare, State Legislative Council deputy chairperson
