Four Indian Bisons die in Tripura

10 Jun 2009, 2320 hrs IST,

AGARTALA: At least four Indian Bisons have been killed in lightning

strikes in Tripura's Trishna wildlife sanctuary, a state forest

official said

Wednesday.

The endangered Gaurs (Bisons), locally known as Gaba, died at the

sanctuary Tuesday in Belonia, 120 km south of state capital Agartala.

The lightning struck the animals

aged two to three years old, " senior forest official Manoj Kumar Majumder said.

The Trishna wildlife sanctuary, bordering Bangladesh, is famous for

the Indian Bison and is home to several species of primates.

Tripura's chief wildlife warden Atul Kumar Gupta and senior forest

officials rushed to the spot to inquire about the incident.

In northeast India, a tame version of the Gaur, also known as Mithun,

is used as a farm animal and is sacrificed and eaten at ritual feasts

by the tribals.

Tourists can see the Gaur or the Indian Bison (which are herbivores)

in the Kaziranga and Manas National Parks in Assam and in Trishna

wildlife sanctuary in Tripura.
