Dear all,

The website of the Department of Environment and Forests, Government

of Assam under the category, P R O P O S E D    W I L D L I F E     S

A N C T U A R I E S, has this written:

Deepar Beel: Migratory Birds, stray Elephant.

Please see: http://assamforest.in/tourism/destination.php

Please note the words 'Stray Elephant'.

This is something which may seem funny but if given a second glance

exposes the ruthless attitude of robbing the wild elephant herds of

their natural habitat.

How disgusting that this department instead of booking the offenders,

checking the gross violations, instead goes and brands wildlife as

'STRAY', and then strives to get a wildlife the status of a

'Sanctuary'.

First they failed to check the rampant logging and preservation of

their habitat in the forests adjacent to the wetland where non-stop

licensed and unlicensed earth cutting and stone quarrying is on.

Secondly allowing licence to the Indian Railways to cut across the

wetland, where the killer trains have till now massacred dozens of

elephants.

Thirdly by using the word 'Stray' they want to slow down or rather

make the recognition of that wetland into that of a sanctuary.

It has been exposed right and left how land reclamation is being

encouraged by the political big wigs in and around the wetland by

nasty means. Dumping of all of Guwahati city's tons and tons of non

bio degradable waste right into the wetland. Slowly poisoning the life

of the wetland. Turning the wetland into a wasteland. Massive fishing

in the wetland and also in the designated 4sq kms of the Ramsar site.

This 'Deepor beel' politics is a brilliant example of the 5 paise will

power this department.

Regards,

Azam
