Guest guest
This concept is a 'Smart Innovative' attempt by the Animal Husbandry by placing their gun on the shoulders of animal lovers and fire. Just do whatever it takes to bury this project before it snowballs out of control. I do not think this nonsense 'GAP " project can be floated so easily by this organisation in Chennai sitting right under the nose of the AWBI and Blue Cross of India. Guest guest
This struck me as laughable too; I hope they are not really serious (and they are just looking for a way to grab funding). Most folks in India and Nepal can¹t even keep a kitten or a puppy as a pet properly, so I can¹t imagine what they would do with a rambunctious billy in the kitchen. But the concept is interesting...if you want the world to stop eating animals, what to do with all the animals that have been raised to be eaten? Let them wander the crowded streets like they do with cows here? Or send them all to the fictitious World Bank Tiger Farms to become a meal there? (sorry, I just had to say that). People are always raising this question. The simple answer is that everyone won't stop eating animals at the same time. The farmers will see the markets for their products going down and will switch to other crops. John.
Guest guest
This idea is as old as the hills. 20 years ago a similar company set up itself in Pune ... invest in goats by the name Shivaji Estates and Livestock Farms (SELF) Then later came Goats (India) Ltd 15 years ago. All have so far bombed. Hope this one joins the list too. Most of them fail because of weak business model. Guest guest
Goats as loving pets indeed!!!!!! When most of the people here in India abandon their pet dogs n kitten how on earth can anyone keep a Goat as pet!!!! Simply ridiculous n weird!!!! Only people who keep the goats as pet are the butchers or the villagers and low caste ppl who rear them to sell as meat!!!!!!! This project will simply go kaput! in no time at all!! I am sure there is a better option of saving them. Like Alice Walker had once said, " I know, in my soul, that to eat a creature who is raised to be eaten, and who never has a chance to be a real being, is unhealthy. It's like...you're just eating misery. You're eating a bitter life. Guest guest
This is in reference to the goats as pets concepts. Instead of discussing it here, since we are all in agreement that its a bad policy, why not write polite letters to the person who is starting this project and dissuade him? Here is my letter to him and here is his letter again (below) Nandita Dear Sir, I read your article regarding goat as pets. Personally I don¹t think it¹s a wise decision to bring in any more animals into our country. Ecologically, there should not be more than five in animals per hectare. At the moment our country has 40 livestock per hectare of and its growing. You will have to ensure that the female goats keep bearing kids in order to milk them the way cows are commercially milked, which, by the way in, is an exploitation of the animal. All these little kids that you will harvest will not be taken in as pets because at the moment Indians do not regard goat as pets. They are going to the slaughterhouse either through you or some other way. Personally I don¹t think this is an ethical businesses and urge you to rethink this one. It seems to me that you are promoting goats as pets so that you can harvest the milk without slaughtering them. Though I think its kind of you to have their welfare at heart, we should realise that 99% of them will end up slaughtered. ABOUT GOATS : Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans and were being herded 9,000 years ago. Goats generally live 10 to 12 years. goats are very sociable, lively, inquisitive and independent intelligent animals. Goats can climb, run, crawl and jump. Male is called buck or billy and female is called doe or nanny. Its believed Goat was the first to give milk and easily digestible and herbal too. Month February has taken origin from goat skin febura PAST HISTORY : such a lovely animal , was known more for meat , and the goat milk was eventually forgotten. This animal could be wonderful pet , consoling the mind and creating a sense of harmony. OUR INDIAN ENVIRONMENT : most of Indians are vegetarians and the need for the present diet recommendations suggest to abstain from meat much as possible. However this has not brought any new line of thinking Goat as a treasure. WE INTEND TO PROPOSE : WE propose to raise a newer venture, Goat milk, Goat cheese and finally to train and distribute Goat kids as pets. Risk factors : its generally believed Goat has stronger immunity , sometimes it can affected by parasites which are medically manageable through medicines and vaccines. Future plans : To step up a full fledged goatery Mediation center in the outskirts of Chennai, where we need some lands for grazing , research and production of milk products . this mediation center would be traditional village resorts with Goats as base., there would be games for children with goats and even special shows by goats. To study the feasibility of such a program where we need support for such a study. To fund the setup of above goatery mediation center either as soft loan or grant. Guest guest
July 20, 2009 M.R. HUBERT, Director SHABNAM RESOURCES 5 (O) BUDDHA STREET, CHENNAI 600024, INDIA Dear Mr. Hubert: I am writing today in regards to your GOATS AS PETS (GAP) proposal recently read on the AAPN mailing list, where it was suggested that instead of criticizing the proposal amongst ourselves that we write to you instead. First off, let me say that as an animal lover and pet owner, that I do appreciate anyone¹s work in helping domestic animals and pets live a better life. However, considering the environment that you are working in, it seems ludicrous to suggest that villagers or urban dwellers will care for a goat like a pet. Having a pet means making the animal part of the human family, and providing the same level of care that would be provided for a human child. For example, we work here in Nepal, India¹s neighbour to the north, and we often focus on helping Nepalis understand what it means to care for a cat or a dog as a pet. This concept is mostly foreign, as most dogs are community animals that live just outside of human homes, hoping for a table scrap or a bit of medicine when they become diseased. Cats are feral, and tolerated as rodent killers only. Goats are slaughtered daily during religious ceremonies, and in general, are considered domestic livestock to be eaten or milked. Animal Nepal has taken the approach to promote alternatives to sacrifice, cruelty-free vegan lifestyles, and to lobby for domestic livestock protection legislation. We would not consider promoting cows, chickens, or goats - as pets - as we don¹t think that is publically viable. However, establishing rescue centres for abused domestic animals is viable, as with our working donkey programs. Others have begun work on creating cow shelters for abused and injured street cows as well. These programs allow for the domestic animal to live out their remaining life in pasture and in solitude. GAP appears to proposing none of the above, and will further exploit the goat as a creature of human consumption, albeit being milked instead of killed outright. So we urge you to refocus your efforts on perhaps humane husbandry, or the proper care of domestic animals. Animal Nepal also objects to the use of animals in shows, as recommended by your proposal. Goats should not be made to do tricks for human entertainment, as they have already sacrificed enough to please their human captors. Well, we wish you the best of luck in reformulating your proposal into a plan more reasonable, and into a way that will help the goats suffering in India. Sincerely, Jiggy Gaton Communication Director Animal Nepal Www.animalnepal.org
