But his ac- quaintances are not surprised. The MLA had organised a feast of hundreds of goats to celebrate his victory in the assembly by-election last year He is unapologetic about the sacrifice he arranged at Guwahati to celebrate the UPA's victory in the trust vote. The 40-year-old burst onto Madhya Pradesh's political scene last September after a surprise victory in Lanji, while contesting from a jail in Jabalpur TW then he was known as " a local Robinhood " in the Naxal-hit Balaghat district bordering Maharashtra. Samarite has 40 criminal cases including dacoity, extortion and attempt to murder pending against him. Samarite was serving time on the charge of dacoity when he contested the poll. He had led a mob that burnt a police station, protesting against the administration's apathy towards the people during a massive flood in the district last year. He had no association with the SP till he contested. Once elected, Samarite crossed swords with other SP leaders. It em- barrassed his party during April's Rajya Sabha poll when he refused to follow the party diktat and vote for Congress-supported independent candidate Vivek Tankha. Samarite said Tankha had harassed him as the state's advocate-general. A day before voting, Samarite created a storm by claiming two Congress leaders had paid him Rs 10 lakh to vote for Tankha.
