*July 29:* Dispur is planning to set up a management society for the Assam

state zoo to help it take quick decisions for smooth operation.

 

The zoo usually has to wait long before it gets the final approval from a

higher authority for any matter. This makes it difficult for the zoo

authorities to take quick decisions.

 

" The issue has been discussed with the authorities and the rules are being

formulated, " a zoo official said.

 

The government will have to move a bill in the Assembly before setting up

the management society.

 

Many zoos in the country are managed by societies to help them take quick

decisions. These societies also help to generate revenue and get help from

the corporate sector.

 

The management society shall prepare a detailed annual plan of operation

based on the zoo's requirements and shall look into the long-term interests

of the zoo. It will comprise senior government officials, representatives of

NGOs and other experts.

 

The official said the society would also look into garnering for the zoo a

share of the income generated through entrance fees. The amount is now

deposited with the government.

 

He said the revenue generated from April-July 2007 was Rs 13 lakh. In 2008,

it was Rs 17.7 lakh from April to June.

 

" Even if the government ploughs back 10 per cent of the revenue, it will be

of tremendous help to the zoo, " he added.

 

The zoo spends nearly Rs 4 crore — mainly on ration and salary — while its

income is only Rs 50 lakh.

 

The official said more revenue would be generated once a restaurant starts

operating at the zoo.
