GEN SECRETARY: This month, I, along with my trustees took the decision to donate the existing Matador ambulance to a school for children with developmental disabilities. From September 2001 till November 2007, this van has served animals for 6 eventful years. Thousands of dogs, cats, birds & most importantly, injured cattle were rescued with the help of this van. This van is all the more special to us because it was our first donation which we received from Mr. Anil Kataria of Ahmednagar SPCA in 2001. But in the past one year the vehicle started giving a lot of problems & since its manufacturing has been stopped since 1998, we faced problems in getting spares. The van was lying idle. In the meantime we got a call from 'Dynamix School' for special children; they needed a vehicle to transport children locally and were ready to bear all expenses related to the van. So we donated the van to them. We are left with 2 small ambulances at our disposal which can cater to small animals. Now, until & unless we get a new 'Cattle Ambulance' we might not able to address the problem of injured cattle. So I request everybody to contact local SPCA's for help. Yours for Animals, Nilesh Bhanage ********************************* 2. URGENT ATTENTION : PAWS is always in need of funds as it is largely dependent on local donations from animal lovers, volunteers & valuable supporters like you. Even a small contribution on a monthly basis will make a difference in the life of the injured animals. For Direct Transfer of Donations: Bank : ICICI Bank Ltd. Branch : Dombivli MIDC Branch A/C. No. : 008801026804 IFSC Code : ICIC0000088 Name of A/C : 'PLANT & ANIMALS WELFARE SOCIETY' ****************************** 3. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS: ## Since the monsoon season is on, we receive lot of calls for wildlife in distress. Thanks to our volunteers who rush to the spot & rescue and handle them safely. On 2nd July, PAWS volunteers Prathmesh Desai & Sourabh Chougule rescued 2 pond herons which had fallen from their nest. On 15th July PAWS trustee Nilesh & Prasad rescued a soft back turtle from a school. Below is the story. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/mmpaper.aspx?Page=article & sectid=2 & contentid=200\ 8071820080718032648563cf122357 <http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/mmpaper.aspx?Page=article & sectid=2 & contentid=20\ 08071820080718032648563cf122357> On 16th July an injured kite was rescued by PAWS staff from Dombivli, the bird's wings were clipped by some children & they were playing with it. All above cases were admitted to Thane SPCA for further rehabilitation. ## This month we also received several cattle calls. On 5th July we got a call at 6 AM in morning when some resident spotted injured donkey lying on spot. PAWS secretary drove the ambulance in the morning & rescued the donkey & her foal which had met with an accident. The mother died at the hospital because of wounds, the foal is now being fed by a cow. Thanks to Diana Singh Roy who always takes care of all the cattle cases which are sent to BSPCA. On 6th July PAWS office received a call regarding a cow from a neighboring village lying injured due to an accident. The people out there wanted to help the cow. Nilesh & Prasad of PAWS helped the people to take the cow to Bombay SPCA. On 24th July, two donkeys from Thane were hospitalized at Bombay SPCA by PAWS founder Anuradha. All the above animals were taken all the way to Bombay SPCA which is over 80 Kms from Dombivli. This is quite hectic for the animals but since there is not much facility for cattle in district, we are left with no other option but to undertake the rigorous journey. ## On 26th July PAWS Trustee Neeta Parwatey's neighbors beat a puppy residing in her building very badly. She took those people & the pup to Panvel Police Station to file the FIR against her neighbor Mr. Kamble. The matter was solved at the police station where Kamble's wife literally came to tears & made an apology even as the police explained them clauses of Indian Penal Code & Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. ## On 30th July Volunteers Sangam Khandare & Crystal Fernandez rescued a Russel's Viper, later released with Kalyan Forest Dept. FUNDRAISING BY SCOTLAND SUPPORTERS: PAWS supporters from Scotland Ms. Heather Shuckburgh, Mr. Mark Wickens, Ms. Charlotte Harrop & Mr. Kurt Meusel did fundraising to get rescue equipments for PAWS. They participated in 'Girvan Harbor Gala Day' by putting-up a stall & sold the bric-a-brac, photographs & clothes. They also held raffle & prizes were sponsored by their resort. They sold bags via E-bay & also had 'Lucky Dip' & 'Chinese Tattoo' at their stall. A Flier about PAWS activities was made available on stall. The photographs are uploaded on our Orkut album: http://www.orkut.co.in/Album.aspx?uid=11637720281533423481 & aid=1215745216 <http://www.orkut.co.in/Album.aspx?uid=11637720281533423481 & aid=1215745216> The first gift from fundraising which came from them was a huge 'Plastic Pet Transporter' with wheels in it. This is useful for us to keep inside ambulance and separate Distemper or Gastro cases. More rescue equipments, medicines are awaited from them since they are visiting PAWS in August. We wholeheartedly thank all of them for their staunch support for the cause we have taken-up. ******************************************* 6. MONSOON TREE PLANTATION & PLASTIC WASTE PICK-UP: Those PAWS volunteers, who missed our last month plantation drive with Hariyali Trust near Kalyan, joined in the next round on 6th July. SOCIETY PET DOG / STRAY DOG FEEDING ISSUES: ## On 15th July PAWS office received a letter from Mahesh Phadnis of Thane. His neighbor had complained against his 2 pet dogs. The complainant turned out to be Pravin Mahajan's wife Rekha Mahajan. PAWS sent her a few letters in this regard. The matter is still pending. ## On 17th PAWS office received a letter from Ms. Lalita Anand Kumar, a resident of Kalyan that her society secretary had ordered the watchmen to beat stray dogs. PAWS sent a stern letter to them & the society clarified in a reply that they are not against any animals. The matter was solved amicably. ## On 23rd Ms. Tamanna Sheikh of Vasai Road wrote a letter to PAWS that her neighbors are beating some dogs with bat. She used to feed those dogs.
