Guest guest Posted April 3, 2009 Report Share Posted April 3, 2009 PAWS ANTI-CRUELTY REPORT -YEAR 2008-09 A] PETS & STRAYS ## On 1st April, Thane resident Aditya Prabhu called PAWS to inform about his missing dog from Thane. He believed that the dog was taken away by the security personnel. PAWS wrote a stern letter to the security company & asked for an explanation. ## Animal Lover Mr. Arif called PAWS when he spotted a pet owner, who was hitting other dogs with stick and also encouraging his pets to attack small puppies. On 9th May, one such pup died due to attack from the pet dogs. Mr. Arif has photo evidence of the same. People argued with the pet Owner. Finally PAWS wrote a stern letter to him copying it to Ramnagar Police Station. The PSI called secretary Nilesh to know about laws. The pet owner was then called to the police station & action was taken against him. ## PAWS volunteer Neha Surve owns a small Pomeranian pup in her house; the society objected to keeping the pet although there is no such society rule. Some society members even threw stones at Neha, and then she called PAWS. Again we wrote a very stern letter to her society committee and the matter was resolved amicably. ## On 23rd June, PAWS active volunteer Crystal Fernandez informed PAWS about her neighbors hitting dogs. PAWS wrote a stern letter to her society & the neighbors stopped troubling the dogs. ## On 1st August PAWS founder Anuradha Ramaswamy informed PAWS that a shop owner beats the dogs that are sitting outside his shop in kalwa. PAWS wrote him a stern letter & now he has changed his behavior ## On 18th August PAWS office received a Complaint from volunteer Anand, a resident of Iyer road that his neighbors hit the dogs with stones if they sit near their house. PAWS wrote stern letter to them & warned them for the same. The matter was solved amicably. ## On 11th September, PAWS office received a letter From Mr. Ajay Marathe wherein his dog was suffering from paralysis & society was not allowing Mr. Marathe to use the lift for his dog. PAWS secretary wrote a very stern letter to his society. Other NGO's also wrote letters to them. The dog is back now home. PAWS secretary wrote a stern letter to the society & the matter was solved amicably. ## On 1st October, PAWS office received a call from resident of Ayodhya Nagri. She complained about the inhuman behavior of her neighbor. The neighbor threw hot oil on a dog & the dog died instantly. PAWS immediately swung into action & sent the dog to BSPCA for post mortem. The concerned area inspector refused to register the case. PAWS secretary called-up Maneka Gandhi in Delhi & Smt. Gandhi had to fire the inspector over phone. After this dressing down, the police immediately arrested the man & sent him behind bars. ## On 8th October, Mrs. Bharti Rawte wrote a letter to PAWS that her society residents beat up strays which live in the building premises since many years. The matter has been taken-up by PAWS. We wrote a letter informing the society about the laws which are concerned with protecting animals. ## On 17th October, PAWS received a complaint from Mr. Suresh Iyer, a resident of Kores Towers, Thane that society watchmen had beaten a pup badly. PAWS wrote a strong warning letter to society & the security agency. Now the society watchman is careful about his actions & our volunteers still keep a watch on his moves. ## Volunteer Siddhesh rescued a pup which was supposed to be killed for religious beliefs. Kudos to the boy who rescued the pup, got it treated from local vet, got the women arrested, filed an FIR in police station, and all the way carried to Mumbra. Then with the help of PAWS ambulance the pup was admitted to SPCA for recuperation. The pet dog is a huge Great Dane who attacks/forces strays for mating. PAWS office issued a stern notice to the owner. Now the problem has stopped for time-being. Also the volunteers are keeping a vigil on this matter. ## On 19th February 2009, Frenny Patole visited PAWS office to complain against her society. The society members ordered the sweeper to abandon the dogs at a remote location. Three of her dogs went missing. PAWS wrote a stern letter to the society, but the matter is still pending. ## On 16th February 2009, Anuradha spotted a calf that was sick, but yet was tied-up in the heat outside a shop in Thane. PAWS volunteer Avinash Bhagat along with Satwant went to meet the owner. Also a complaint was lodged at the police station and the calf was checked by a vet. ## PAWS volunteer Saurabh Edwankar informed us in march via e-mail that 'Challengers Society' had put-up a notice on their board which was meant for driving away the stray dogs that are living in society. PAWS wrote a stern letter to society mentioning laws. The decision on the same is still awaited & volunteers are keeping watch. B] Trees ## On 1st February 2009, Animal Farm Trust, Pune founder Sucheta Vishwanathan found her neighbors cutting a tree unnecessarily. Thanks to PAWS Tree Protection Brochure, with its reference she could fight with neighbors to save the tree. She called the tree officer who intervened in the matter & stopped the cutting of the tree. This is the first victory of tree protection brochure. ## On 24 March Mr. Mani from Chembur called us to inform that his society's shop keepers intended to burn a tree. PAWS immediately sent the Tree Protection Brochure which he circulated to all the shops.
