*Ashram dogs lead life of luxury

* *BY UPENDRA LAMICHHANE

* KATHMANDU, Oct 12 - For average Nepalis it would be out of reach. But dogs

in Bhairab Ashram in Bankali, Pashupatinath, enjoy every luxury - from

resting in sophisticated woolen carpets to staying in air conditioned rooms.

It will be a surprise to many but 53 dogs in the Ashram are resting in

woolen carpets that are affordable to only the rich people in Nepali

context. Dogs are served with fresh meat and hot cooked rice everyday. For

snacks, they get tea and biscuits.

The luxury that dogs enjoy in the Ashram are not limited to the these

facilities.

They have special beds to sleep in, besides the arrangement of separate

bathrooms. " They hardly ever fall sick because we instantly call veterinary

doctors when any of them show slightest symptom of sickness, " said Dipesh

Nepali, one of the caretakers of these highly pampered dogs.

Aghori Baba " Chun Chun " who came from Tamilnadu in India had set this trend

of serving dogs in a lavish way. The trend continues even after four years

since his death.

" We have not lessened the facilities even after Baba's death, " said Mukunda

Chaulagain, another caretaker.

About Rs. 100,000 a month is spent for the purpose of taking care of these

dogs.

" The only source of income is donations from kind hearts, " said Nepali who

has been associated with the Ashram for the past past 24 years.

There are four caretakers for the dogs that consume eight kilograms of meat,

besides milk and rice, everyday.

May all dogs receive such compassion and care...I know my own Nepali Krypto

would fit right in at the Ashram, demanding tummy scratches and tennis balls

on top of the other care given.
