Glorious news for farmed animals in India!

Vegetarian " meat " is a centuries-old tradition in East Asia. In

countries like China, Japan and Thailand, Buddhist vegetarians have

kept alive a special cuisine that resembles real animal meat made from

soybeans, wheat gluten, and other non animal or purely vegetarian

sources.

The culinary skills applied in preparing " Vegetarian Meat " were as

perfect for a blindfolded person to find no differences between a Non

vegetarian preparation and a vegetarian preparation. Originally made

as a special cuisine in Buddhist monasteries, mock meat as an

exquisite item remained as secret in most parts of the Buddhist

influenced parts of the World.

However the first time in India, the S.H.A.M .K International Pvt. Ltd

has launched SAMALI – A 100% vegetarian substance which embodies the

original concept of Non Vegetarian food.

The recent H5N1 outbreak in some districts of Assam state in India,

followed by similar cases of positive detection of the virus in

poultry in neighbouring states had resulted in the cull of millions of

poultry and destruction of poultry products.

Strict action was taken against offending vendors who violated the BAN

on the sale of poultry & products.

This BAN helped the goat/ sheep flesh prices take a steep rise.

Fish was flying high as well till yesterday.

Today (14th Jan` 2009) barely a month after the poultry BAN arrives

the feasting festival of Assam called Bihu.

Surprisingly the Animal Husbandry/ Government removes the BAN with

special conditions throwing a special Bonanza for the deprived.

The conditions being:

1. That the Poultry has to be brought from Non- H5N1 infested areas.

2. That the consumers check the trade papers etc before buying.

Within hours of the news flashing in media and press that the BAN has

been lifted, the nooks and corners of the city streets plus the

markets were FLOODED with poultry products, in large quantities in

battery cages.

One could see frenzy buying of Ducks, Broilers, Local chickens,

eggs.... in large quantities.

This left many questions unanswered.

*How could the poultry & poultry products in such large quantities

have landed in from at such a short notice?

*Is this out of pressure from the Poultry Producers Association that

the Animal Husbandry/Government was made to remove the BAN?

*Has the Government compromised on safety with Festivity, a goodwill

gesture to ensure strengthening of its vote bank?

But the Big question now that remains is:

Can a meat supplement or a pandemic threat to the society and person

in general qualify to bring any relief for animals?

" Who cares for the trade certificates and where they are from, we are

blessed by the lifting of the BAN and we are all out to have a FEAST " ,

this was what an elderly gentleman had to say when asked his reactions

to the frenzy buying of poultry.

Well, in my opinion and with my experience of this part of India, I am

of the belief that no amount of meat supplements or threats of

diseases/pandemics resulting from consumption of any form of meat is a

reason for the meat eating people to go veg

Few years back there was an alert by the Animal Husbandry here that

40% of goat/ sheep flesh sold in Guwahati city was infested with

anthrax and tuberculosis.

This only helped in the mushrooming of more illegal butcher shops. How?

Well, the food inspector would go inspecting the shops in only the

municipal markets, destroying the dead bodies (he thought to be

infested) with phenyl. As this crisis continued some smart

enterprising residents opened make shift butcher shops to fill in the

demand.

Selling rotten veggies you may get dragged to the Consumer Court but

you certainly can get away by selling all sorts disease infested meat.

They just don't care, they just love MEAT !
