Guest guest
http://blogs.wsj.com/photojournal/2009/06/19/inside-yangon-myanmar/ Inside Yangon, Myanmar *The Wall Street Journal* The above photo blog is by The Wall Street Journal. It is a recent exclusive insight into Myanmar. One of the pictures shows an elephant in the Yangon zoo chained. The caption reads: * " A monk walks past an elephant in Yangon’s zoo June 1. The elephants are chained to a post and unable to move about. Last year the government took many of the zoo’s animals to the new capital. " (The Wall Street Journal)* * * Following is one of the comment posted to the above photo blog on the site: " The Yangon zoo is incredibly sad. What was not mentioned is that most of the animals depend on the poor visitors to buy food from convenient vendors to feed the animals in acts of mercy. This “allows” the urban poor to make Buddhist merit by demonstrating compassion to the hungry animals, and allows the government to provide less than is required for the animals’ basic survival.
