The four were booked under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Among the four accused, two were sent to judicial custody to Namchi Jail today while two others were granted bail by the District Court, Namchi. Among the two who got bail were Laxuman Pradhan and Rajen Pradhan of Gyalshing while Nir Bdr. Mizar of Jalpaiguri and Kishore Kr. Chettri of Gyalshing were sent to judicial custody. The incident occurred on September 16 when some of the locals informed the Forest department officials that the foursome were preparing venison after killing the animal at Subuk village near Reshi in South Sikkim. Acting on the information, the Forest officials reached the spot and arrested the four culprits. The officials also recovered the fresh meat of barking deer which the accused were preparing for their meal. During interrogation, the culprits admitted that the deer was brought there by the flowing water of river Rangeet. According to them, the deer was already dead when they found it. The court was not convinced with their statement and two of them were sent to judicial custody.
