Your Chance to Help a Social Cause 1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY: I sincerely feel that Animal Welfare NGO's and volunteers, supporters etc each form a pillar of the animal-nature lovers community. They should run hand-in-hand so as to fulfill the objectives of their mission. If callers are taking help of NGO's and their services, then the least that is expected is that they should support, help the charity as is needed. The same rule applies to NGO's - if they are taking help from volunteers , then they should help these individuals. But many times we see just the opposite cases. NGO's work tirelessly for their cause throughout the year. Their staff works day & night to help our four legged friends & other creatures. It has been noticed many times that volunteers and members do not want to help NGO'S but just want to help strays from their area. This attitude needs to be changed. The NGO's are made by people for animals & not for animal lover's individual love for animals belonging to their area. Those people involved with charity are ultimately helping the animal lovers only through the medium of NGO's. Many times NGO's are bad-mouthed but the animal lovers, service availers should understand that they are criticizing the people who are doing charitable work in the most constructive manner. Reciprocally, the NGO's should involve more people, share their knowledge, always be receptive, helpful & not be individual centric. Their ultimate aim should be to help animals, wildlife but in a constructive way. That's why we keep getting people who want to work with PAWS. Today we have already crossed the milestone of 200 volunteers. I have worked in the past with an NGO. Also, I have seen 2 NGO's which started after I registered PAWS. All the three organizations were not able to perform because of internal differences, no dedication, only emotions & no practicality. The intention to help animals was left aside & founders became so negative after the un-successful attempt that they left the welfare work. Its very sad to see this. We already have less then 1% community which loves, cares for animals, nature & wildlife. So we should be united & co-operative. Think over it! I am sure that my 10 years experience in NGO sector will definitely guide upcoming NGO's. So do not hesitate to ask. Your for Animals / in Nature Nilesh Bhanage 2. FUNDRAISER OF THE MONTH - OLD NEWSPAPER COLLECTION: PAWS organized a collection drive of old newspapers, old books, empty milk packets and other junk materials to be sold for the benefit of stray dogs in our colony. The proceeds of the sale went towards sterilization and anti-rabies vaccine of dogs to keep their population in control. Since times immemorial, man & dogs shared a deep relationship of love, trust and companionship. On Sunday, the15th our ambulance ferried around town to collect all junk material. We raised a few thousand rupees within a span of 2 hours. 6. MONTHLY ANTI-RABIES DRIVE - KALWA / DOMBIVLI: Every year PAWS holds a vaccination camp in Kharegoan / Kalwa area where volunteer Anuradha Ramaswami looks after few strays. On 22nd March 2009, PAWS Volunteers & Vety. Students Anahita, Lalita & Swapna along with Satwant, Akshay, and Avinash participated in the drive & vaccinated a total of 60 strays in Kalwa Area. BEAT THE HEAT INITIATIVE FOR STRAYS: Every summer, stray cattle, dogs and other animals thirst for water in the sweltering heat. This year, PAWS launched 'Beat the Heat' initiative which involves building water troughs near pavements and roadside edges. These are square-sized mud pots affixed to pavement corners & filled with water everyday. Now the thirsting cow or working donkey, running cat or stray dog will have drinking water facility. The project is funded through local donations and managed by PAWS trustees Mr. Nilesh Bhanage, Ms. Anjali Ekbote and volunteer Ms. Amita Kulkarni. The task is to build hundred water troughs. STRAY FEEDING / PET DOG ISSUES / TREE CUTTING: ## PAWS volunteer Saurabh Edwankar informed us via e-mail that 'Challengers Society' had put-up a notice on their board which was meant for driving away the stray dogs that are living in society. PAWS wrote a stern letter to society mentioning laws. The decision on the same is still awaited & volunteers are keeping watch. ## On 24 March Mr. Mani from Chembur called us to inform that his society's shop keepers intended to burn a tree. PAWS immediately sent the Tree Protection Brochure which he circulated to all the shops. The brochure contains details of Tree Protection Act. 9. CAMPAIGN AGAINST TREE CUTTING ON 'HOLI' FESTIVAL: As per tradition, a day prior to 'Holi' festival, marathi people burn fire wood in the premises of their locality / society. So we had a quick campaign against tree-cutting. We took printouts of specially-made posters & pasted them in our society / building / colonies notice board. For this campaign more then 25 volunteers gathered together at PAWS office for sticking posters across city. Media coverage was given to create awareness.
