Guest guest
Guwahati, Thursday, April 23, 2009 Serial killer 'Steel Monster' strikes again A young elephant calf was crushed to death by a speeding train in an area which is EXTREMELY VULNERABLE to train elephant deaths in the past. Deepor Beel a Ramsar Site wetland sandwiched between the city of Guwahati and the Rani-Garbhanga forest (bordering Meghalaya state) has been a hot spot for elephant herds. Elephant herds just love spending quality time there in the wetland and they come in large herds from the forests as if it were a ritual. Sometimes they stay for as long as 20days at a stretch. It is only after the mighty Indian Railways decided to lay their jaws of death, that one after one the monster trains have been crushing these gentle giants at regular intervals. Today's incident is not just an unfortunate stray incident or a rare accident. Instead, this is plain and simple calculated murder. Something that would certainly not require the skills of Sherlock Holmes to prove. It has been happening and it has been ignored to the maximum. The Forest Department knows this shall happen. The Project Elephant knows this shall happen. Even the common person here knows that this shall happen soon again. If only elephants could speak, they would remember the trains as nothing but 'Killer Steel Monsters'. A monster who has just NO BUSINESS to be invading the forests of Independent India where 'Elephants' and all other animals are protected by the laws. As a matter of fact these voiceless animals have also been asked to be respected and cared for by the Indian Constitution ! But if only things were as good practical as in the books. The Greed of development has laid the killer tracks. The Greed of land grabbers has shrunk the elephant corridors. The Greed of priority for Humans over other species is gonna wipe them all out. I would like to end with the words of the Mahatma, " There's enough for everybody's need and not enough for anybody's greed " ? I can only hope some miracle happens and these gentle giants can breathe easy.
